Hey All,

After a turbulent start to the year I've just ordered everything I need to get back into some PC gaming, my only remaining issue is I only get 30GB of internet data a month using my phone to tether with so I was wondering if there is anyway I can download the data for games and such on my android mobile phone or windows tablet and transfer them over to my PC so I can use my allowance for actually playing games and updating the PC itself instead of just downloading them?

I know I can download all the drivers needed on my phone and certain sites like GOG should work and allow me to transfer but I'm not aware of any option to do this on steam.

Any help would be appreciated.

A friend tried using his mobile internet to play Hunter call of the wild with me, it was not very successful at all.

Good luck i am sure someone might help you

You'll struggle with anything Steam related and downloading the right files.

Gaming on mobile internet is certainly doable, I was restricted to doing that for quite some time, but a dedicated fixed broadband is what you need to enjoy it.

Pretty much the answer I was expecting unfortunately, due to my current living arrangement I cant get broadband so I might have to resort to visiting a friend or family member for a day with broadband to download the games I'm after (Monster Hunter World, Dark Souls 3, The Witcher, XCOM & XCOM 2, Magic The Gathering Arena and PUBG are the main contenders I think) and using the mobile data for the rest... alternatively see if I can get a strong enough Wi-Fi signal to connect to the library's Wi-Fi that's nearby :D

Thanks for the quick replies though all :)

Have a look at gog.com. you can just download the installation files for most of their stuff. Not tried it on a phone. But should work. They don't have as much stuff as steam and mostly older stuff, but they have the witcher and I think xcom

Physical media such as CD/DVD and general jiggery pokery was a good way of keeping install sizes down in the past on PC. Remember when audio tracks played LIVE from the CD which had to be in the drive while playing to avoid sticking a huge audio file on your HDD?

Nowadays, the PC market has for the most part got rid of physical media, we have relatively uncompressed, pure audio and HUGE resolution textures and HUGE game environments, the cost of this is massive download sizes which is OK for those on fixed line broadband but for anyone else, can be a little overwhelming.

For the most part, most AAA PC games are still bound by the console media limit of around 50GB or there abouts but even then, day 1 patches can be HUGE.

Going medialess was the best thing that could have happened to gaming, no more manual updates, no more "No-CD" patches just for convenience, the downside is you need a stable, unlimited internet connection if you are a gamer nowadays.

Alternatively, ask some nice folks on here and am sure they will download some games for you if they have them on Steam etc and put them onto a external HDD if you send them one.

Pretty sure with Steam you can download the game files on a different machine, transfer them onto your other Steam library, and then when you go to install them, it'll just re run the installer.

Mate of mine used to do this a few years back - only had access to 3G internet at home with a 3GB data cap, so he'd download games on his laptop while we were at college and then install them at home.

The Steam Backup feature has nearly always been useless.

For the most part, you are simply better off just copying the game data folder.

Yep, they have really gave that some attention in recent years.... NOT.

Just select the custom option and set it to 9999 (i think that was the cap).

Years back when living at home my folks had shocking internet (rural area / 2Mb) which meant downloading games from Steam was pretty much a no-no, would take all weekend to download a moderately sized game. When i used to visit my GF, i would just download the games on her internet, and then 'backup' them on my laptop, and restore them on my PC.

Same boat as you OP, as I live at work getting broadband installed isn't possible and works network is pants and incredibly limited so I rely on a 60GB 4G package.

If I want a new game or any large file I send a USB stick or HDD to my brother to download for me.

When I first moved to India it seemingly took me forever to get fibre into my residential address.

My office was fine, so usually once a week, I would bring my tower in and hook it up to the fibre and let it do its thing.

Royal pain in the posterior, but it is possible.

Excellent, thanks for the recent updates, given me much more hope :)

I have a small windows tablet I can download the games onto and use that for transferring too.

Pickup a cheapo 1tb external drive, you can also keep that as a backup incase anything goes wrong with your system :D
