PC gaming really is in a bad way atm

My biggest gripe is the number of games being released which should be good but instead turn out to be massively disappointing.

Oblivion: Actually built my new PC for this and what do I get? A **** console port, can't believe the UI is as bad as it is and it even has options for the analogue sticks on the 360 controller left in the menu  Yes the mod community have done a fantastic job rectifying the situation but frankly - WTF. Also used to CTD regularly although it only seems to do that on exit now.

NWN2: After the disappointment of Oblivion I thought this might be a decent game... WRONG! Runs like an absolute dog for some reason and it isn't even that pretty, no traveling either just a map with icons to click on - it's not 1993 you know! BG2 was massively better.

ArmA: OFP with slightly updated graphics and a worse campaign.

It's like there's no innovation left any more - bring on Spawn. Take that UFO: whatevermajig game - utter rubbish, if I want to play Xcom then I'll fire up DOSBox and play it, by all means be inspired by a classic game like Xcom but don't recreate the exact game just with slightly better graphics *grrrrr*

Friday rant anyone? :D

Theres still lots of PC titles coming out :)

Quake Wars
Bioshock
Hellgate London
War in Conflict
Age of Conan
Warhammer Online
Universe At War
Project Offset
Overlord
Spore(next year)
Crysis
Call of duty 4

the list gose on and on, I think as long as as people play games there will always be a place for the pc game industry..

There are a few good titles coming out on on the PC - Colin McRae Dirt, MoH Airborne.

Plenty of classics to enjoy, particularly now the hardware has caught up. GTA:SA looks amazing with the GFX cranked up on a C2D 6600 and Geforce 7600 GT OC. FS2004 (with FS Passengers add on), Oblivion, Freelancer, X3 - all good stuff.

I don't think it's ever going to be like the 90's again with a new space and flight sim every other month, but PC gaming ain't dead and as someone who's not a great fan of console gaming (I own neither X-Box 360 or PS3) hope the genre will continue.

Alan Wake
Assasins Creed

Recent superb releases:

Supreme Commander
C&C3

Soonish releases I'm spooging over:

Quake Wars
Crysis

Looks ok to me :)

Seems Feb-Apr and Sep-Nov are the best periods where the good stuff comes out. With the odd exception of course. I guess the marketing gurus consider those times optimum for PC games for some reason.

ok so one days releases of games means the whole pc gaming industry is going to hell /drama queen.

How about you look at the massively successful games currently out, and the ones in development.

what succesful games are in devolopment? :)

As mentioned in the first reply, who cares if there are no games being released which pique your interest, just play some quality older titles.

Even if no more games were released until the next decade, I still wouldn't get bored of PC games due to the huge backcatalogue of titles I haven't had time to play yet.

Much like the mainstream obsession with 'fresh new music', I've never really gone along with the idea that things are only worth looking at if they are either forthcoming or brand new.

PC gaming is becoming too small of a market to develop solely for now, especially when you can get just as good on much cheaper consoles. I personally think Crytek for example, is absolutely -crazy- to make Crysis solely for high end PCs, the market is like an ant compared to low end spec PCs and consoles. This is why I think they are porting it to PS3 and perhaps 360 before not too long (they have job places for PS3 programmers on their site)

I'm sad to say it but PC gaming definitely seems to be on the wane of late - look back to the mid 90s-early 00s and you'll be shocked at the difference in today's market.

I'm not sure what the cause is really. Strong console market? The rise of mmos? It's a shame to see anyway as if the PC gaming genre was ever to die altogether we'd be missing out on some great games you'd never see on a console.

It feels to me a little like the period when Amiga/Atari ST gaming was on the wane and PC gaming was taking over. The same arguments were given then that the PC couldn't do certain types of games as well as an Amiga... but a year or two later it was doing them and more.

Personally I'll always choose a PC title over a console one. But I have to question spending £300 to £400 on a new gfx card when that would get me a new console instead.

I'll tell you something

There hasnt been a decent FPS that has beaten CoD:UO

WHY!!!

There hasn't been any decent pc games in ages, really thinking of getting a 360/ps3, which is sad, coz i've always avoided consoles, its just like it feels like the pc market for games is dieing... :(

you should really try looking at a shop then :( plenty of good games around, a few excellent ones too.

Don't worry about it too much! I turned to the dark side (depressed at the lackluster state of PC market) a few months back, and I was a rabid anti console freak. :D

Trouble is the console market is even more prone to this seasonal down turn in quality releases. The only future release I'm remotely interested in buying (apart from Mass Effect) is Forza 2.

The one thing that the PC still has over its console rivals is the hard drive. This loading/playing from DVD nonsense is almost archaic (and with my model of 360, damn noisy at times too.).

Uhm, having to sit for half an hour installing a PC game is pretty archaic compared to being able to play off the fly. But maybe that's just me.

Worth noting that 360 and PS3 has HDDs as well. Reasons for owning a gaming PC (the extra benefits it would bring) are being eroded away.

Installing applications on a PC/Mac isn't archaic. Besides, magnetic drives STILL have much lower latency and much higher bandwidth than thier optical counterparts.

30 minutes to install a game? Try 5...

Isn't the decline of PC gaming more associated with the high cost of video game development? It's simply much easier to generate a profit for your investment when you publish to console.

This is a very old argument.

I remember similar things being said when PS1 came out and again when PS2 and Xbox were launched.

PC games have gone though a bit of a low point in the last 12 months or so but they will bounce back...if fact i think they are already, Company of Heros, Stalker out already and very good, Quake Wars hopefully next month and Crysis and UT3 in the Autumn plus HL2 ep2.

Top notch games take a long time to be developed.

Take a look at this if you think PC's for games are dying (may need to register but its free) from the New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/23/technology/23gaming.html?ex=1179115200&en=58e12afca0ae1c6d&ei=5070

The massively multilpayer games like World of Warcraft are keeping the PC games market alive at present....but these people will move on to other PC titles given time.

Personally I think the delays to Vista have caused many of the games we seem to have been waiting for to be delayed because developers have wanted to make sure they work on the new OS.

By this time next year many will be questioning why they bought a PS3/X360 as many/most PCs will be able to match it if not better it graphically and from my point of view being a FPS fanatic I can't stand using a controller - give me a keyboard and mouse any day!!

I've just bought a Xbox360 to pass the time while the new PC games and graphics cards are in development. R6V on the 360 is looks amazing and the gameplay is great. It's a cheap toy, but I don't think it will ever replace PC gaming.

Hopefully some new FPSs will come out later this year; high hopes for Crysis , Quake Wars , etc.

The 8800 will come down in price and those 24" monitors should break down into the sub £300 range.

Get a console and have some fun now!
