Hi guys...

Been several years out of the PC gaming side of things.
Wondering if some can help or has experience with 3D gaming on PCs?

With the new ATI cards arriving I am considering a PC for this year to use with a very high end racing cockpit, a 3 year d.i.y project. Games like C.A.R.S and RFACTOR 2 are likely to appeal to me along with other racing titles.

The main requirement is a system that will support triple 720p
So a desktop 3840 x 720 but also run the latest games in 3D with good framerates. Of course FPS could be played to but primarily my interest is with racing games. I do like the idea of a 7970 or if needed a 7990 single card option to run all screens. However I have no idea if Nvidia have a better solution or what motherboard, cpu, ram would be advised being out of this for so long.

An overclocked setup but stable around 4.5GHz seems good spec and value but I am open to suggestions regards which "Graphics Options" are best.

I am using triple Optoma GT750 3D Projectors (available these days for £550 so great value) These are Nvidia 3D vision ready also but unsure if thats my best option as Ive read ATI are finally beginning to do more regards 3D multiscreen support. Their will be 3x 55"-60" screens used in the typical canted formation for a large scale gaming experience.

Would appreciate any feedback or recommendations.

Two 7970 should provide what you are looking for but i can not comment of ati's 3d capabilites but my understanding is NV 3d surround should work straight out off the box so some 3gb 580's might be a better idea. :)

Also for gamea i5 2500k would be more than enough at 4.5+

Just read your D.I.Y build have you finished it now ?

If it's 3d your considering, although it can be done with ATI, Nvidia is the leaders regarding 3d, by far.

The downside is you'll need sli for your planned resolution.

Even though ATI are going for 3D, Nvidia will have far better support as they have been plugging away for a few years with the tech.

I have tried 3 1080p projectors powered by a single 5970. Running GTR2, RBR and Dirt3 all maxed out. I have to be honest here and say they are brilliant but only if you dont go mad on size. I made the fatal mistake of being way too wide/big. Tip: Get the center projector/cockpit to a relistic size first, then add the other 2 to the mix.. Its awesome, but ultimately i went back to my 3 24" dells. The bonus of not going too big is the increased brightness. I was going to make a curved screen, had loads of ideas lined up but i'm happy with my current setup as i dont get much time for gaming these days

Not to derail your thread, OP, but a quick question. I';ve been thinking of getting an LG 50" 3D plasma 1080p with Active shutter glasses + Freeview HD (to use with a 3D blu ray player) for about the same price as this projector. What do you think is a better deal?

I really would prefer to stick to one single card.
Maybe things have changed but I do remember times when some new games are released they don't fully utilise X-Fire or SLI properly.

Additionally one card is easier to then sell on and upgrade whenever it needs to.

If anyone can remember seeing or knows of review/benchmarks done with the Nvidia cards looking at the 3D performance over multiscreens that would be great. Although I won't rule out ATI if they get their support up and running.

Chances are I may not purchase the machine till start of 2nd QTR so things may develop. The budget hasn't been decided but really the focus is on the highest end cards and a good spec in general.

There is a review here >>> http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1034/pg11/nvidia-surround-featuring-3d-vision-mafia-2.html

Thats using sli 480's but in order to use nvidia surround you will need to use 2 gpu's as its how nvidia use there tech, but in all fairness you'll need that kind of horse power any way to run that res at a constant 120fps as with 3d 120fps is equally to 60 fps in 2d mode. also with racing games you cant have a slight stutter or low frame rate would totally ruin the experiance.
