PC Gaming Screen Resolutions...

I play at 1680x1050, have done for a good few years now, all games run fine at that res and I never have to compromise on effects, I just whack it up to ultra and away we go, the witcher 2 is the only thing I have ever has to drop a setting on but I would still prefer the resolution over a couple of effects

Is this ‘really’ that important, does it really make all the difference? I would rather play games with a lower resolution with zero screen tearing and ultra details then at a higher resolution with less detail etc.. Crysis 2 if you asked me looked every bit as good in 1280 x 720 as it did at 1920 x 1080 yet at 720 ran like butter instead of treacle and was a really smooth experience, even for such a lower end GPU..
at higher resolutions graphics card feel their age faster ;)

im a 1920x1080 gamer myself and im still using a GTX460 because imo nothing has needed me to upgrade pretty much every game so far ive been able to run on max settings or very close to (turning 1-2 settings down at most but nothing you can notice anyway)

bf3 is probably the only game i need to upgrade for if i want ultra (in the beta i was getting around 40fps ish on caspian)

my stepson has a laptop with a 5650 card and he games at 1280x720 and tbh all the games ive got for him havent really looked that much worse than my desktop computer but the extra screensize is always nice when your at a desk.

sitting on a sofa with a laptop i can deal with the lower resolutions fairly easily

Went up from a 19" 1280x1024, to a 24" 1920x1080 and the different was mindblowing, now I've gone up to a 30" 2560x1600, I still have my old 24", having tried to use it the other day I just couldn't do it, the difference is so huge.

But it comes at a cost, gone from a 8800GT, GTX295 and now 2x6950s, tbh based on the current crop I'll need to upgrade again before too long.

Depending on the game really. Most games I can run 1920x1080, but if things are a bit more demanding (and I want Ultra graphics options) I have to tone things down a bit. With a GTX 560 ti.

Ahh 800 x 600 glory days! I remember playing games at that thinking "Corrrrrrrrrr!"

I tend to run at 1440 x 900 as thats what my monitor supports. I get the feeling from all the threads on different forums that its not as good a resolution as it used to be but its fine for me! Only problem I have is when I have to make the wallpaper fit instead of downloading wallpaper at the specific size, but thats a pet peeve! :p

I remember the diablo 2 patch that upped the res to 800x600 that was awesome at the time :D
i still use 1024x768 for most games, its only recently that i upped BFBC2 to 1280x1024 it gives a lot more definition on the text
i have a dual boot with XP/7 the general rule is 1024x768 on XP and 1280x1024 on win7, does anyone else stick to the unwritten 'rule' of always make the game res the same as the desktop? :)

1920x1080 gamer here as well running from a 6950. Would rather run at native res and turn options down/off than run at a non-native res.

I agree, resolution increases tend to be a bit overrated in the sense that visual fidelity is usually enhanced more by in game settings than simply increasing the resolution. That said, I'd still take high resolution over anti-aliasing and obviously with TFT monitors it is a bit of a moot point anyway as you'll generally want to be running at either native res, or a quarter of it.

For years I played Quakeworld in 320x200 software rendering with the details turned down even on a 19" monitor (capable of 1600x1200), obviously this looked an absolute mess but it seemed best for online play.

My TV actually has higher resolution than my monitor but because it is more than 4x the size it doesn't really look any more defined.

I game in 1680x1050 (originally lower than the resolution I used to use for singleplayer 10 years ago if I could get enough FPS!) and it seems fine to me although obviously that's not to say I wouldn't prefer to use higher if it were available.

1280x1024 > A HDTV that scaled 1920x1080 very nicely. And now just on Monday I upgraded to a U3011 and now game at 2560x1600. The image quality and immersion in games is just incredible.
