Pc gaming starter pack?

Any keyboard but I would say a decent mouse ..say Like MX518 cheap as chips now and still arguably the best gaming mouse.

Its funny I could never get into consul gaming had quite a few, have the 360 now but only use it for streaming :)

Save some game money for Christmas. You will get ridiculous prices on steam over the christmas period. If you get a few packs they can easily tie you over for a year with the amount of quality games in them.

Mouse = Razer Deathadder. Had mine since release, best mouse ever owned.

Thanks for the input peeps much appreciated, i think the consensus is a good one stick to a basic wired mouse and keyboard see how i get on.
Am looking at sennheiser headsets to complete the game setup, thanks Noto :D

Anytime. From my experience I've had 2 Sennheisers. Started with HD497s then upgraded to HD555. Both still work i just prefer the look of the HD555s bit more stylish.

i would try getting a noise cancelling mic, if you can, makes a world of difference when on Skype/ventrillo/teamspeak. Plantronics are considered the best in the field for mics as they do professional receptionist mics too. I just wrap a mic thing around my neck when gaming with mates.

-Razer Abyssus 3500dpi or Deathadder 3500dpi
-Steelseries QcK Mouse Pad
-Sennheiser Stereo Headset
-Any solid Keyboard from Microsoft or Logitech

I'd be happy with the above as starter set up :)

Am new to pc games, having played console games for years i feel like a change.
I know it's going to take a bit of getting used to using a keyboard and mouse so would like some advice on what to buy in the way of keyboard/mouse/headset , preferably not ultra expensive incase i dont take to it :)
Thanks in advance :)

main thing i'd say is don't buy a "gaming headset" they're pants and over priced, get yourself a ncie pair of sennheisers and then use the spare money to buy a cheap desk mic, you'll get just the same (and often better) sound quality on the mic and the headphones themselves are much much better than the crappy ones in most headsets.

Personally I use:
Mouse: Logitech MX518
Keyboard: Logitech G11
Headset: Fatal1ty Gaming Headset
Headphone: Goldring NS1000 (ordered today)

Soon as I get my goldrings, I will probably not use my Fatal1ties unless I really need my mic.

For a mouse i would keep it pretty basic. Any cheap logitech or microsoft mouse will do the job. Imo the more expensive the mouse the more sensitive they are and harder to set up and get perfect.

Keyboard again any basic usb keyboard will do the job.

I have a g15 keyboard and razer mouse which would be a bit overkill for some one used to a 360 pad :) But to me i have got so use to them any other mouse and keybaord i use now feels cheap and crappy.

A good pair of headphones is a must i would reccomend the Fatal1ty gaming headset they really comfy and sound great also comes with a removeable mic and i think i got a free game or 2 with mine and a handy bag to store them in.

I dont recall them being that pricey though so would be hard to recomend them at that price but they are VERY comfy. I would still use them today but my dog chewed through the wire i then decided to upgrade to a 5.1 headset.

And as others have said install steam and wait for the sales you can get games so cheap it makes it hard to pay full retail prices for games.

All your input is appreciated peeps as per popular opinion am going to stick with basic keyboard and mouse. Came across a pair of wireless headphones i forgot i had in the cuboard so that was my bonus for the week.
Bought the orange box, even though i played it on console i thought it best to play something i know while getting used to keyboard etc. Am looking forward to friday night phones switched off blinds closed and portal till the wee small hours :)

+1 for the MX518.

My first mouse when I really got into PC gaming, magic piece of gear, the only reason I changed was to try something new and have since been on the Razer Lachesis, which whilst I now prefer, it'd didn't feel as natural as the MX518 does to begin with.

Surely he should play HL1 before HL2 if he does purchase the Orange Box...

i would get a 518 have two :p

get orange box or half life 2 games and cod 4 .

like tefal says i wouldnt get a cheap headset get a standalone mic and a set of sennhiesers. might be bit over budget but in long run youll save more and have better quality in games and on voice coms like teamspeak or vent / mumble.

I would also recommend that to ANYONE starting PC gaming.

Not a great deal in cost but some of the best moments in PC gaming history.. right there for £16.99 :)

It is a great deal in cost, as well as gameplay, if you don't buy from Steam. It can be had for under a tenner. If he's a noobie to PC gaming he wont know that Steam are expensive (including most of their 'deals').

Stop being a clown.

In other posts, you have made it blatantly clear you dislike Steam for one reason or another.

In my opinion, £16.99 for the Orange Box is not expensive, I think it is good value.

Sure, he could purchase it for £12.85, but then has to wait for it to be posted. For £4 extra.. he is getting "IMMEDIATE DELIVERY", not even a courier can match that :)

I personally would rather pay the extra on Steam (Especially for none Steamworks game) and have the game in my account ready to download whenever I wish to play it instead of having a large number of discs and product keys lying around.

It is all down to personal preference. You may consider it "expensive" but MANY MANY others consider it "good value" when taking into account the ease of use it offers and convenience.

Generally, it is not more expensive than buying from the high street and prices will come down once the high street realises it no longer has a "Death grip" on publishers which is slowly happening allready.

...and you have made it blatantly clear that you are an extreme Steam fanboi (which is what I have a dislike for, not Steam).

As for being a clown...you said your self it was not a good deal cost wise, (while still recommending to someone new to PC gaming), then you claim it is good value...riiight.rate.

You are also mistaken (being kind) about the cost and the postage of TOB. You can get it from a major seller for £12.99 including delivery.

As for the benefits of not needing discs etc...surely that doesn't apply as the games will be tied to your Steam account one installed anyway?

Generally it is more expensive through Steam than buying from the high street (or even other digital download sellers when applicable)...in fact 'generally more expensive' is being kind to Steam...'invariably' would probably be more accurate.

I understand the benefits of digital downloads, I prefer that to buying retail as it happens, but I think that the cost should be similar (or cheaper) to retail given the savings of physical media canceling the extra costs of servers etc.

I think you have misunderstood my original comment, although I understand how this could be so.

When I said:

When I said "Not a great deal in cost", it is intended to be "Not a large amount" as to say that although the cost is relatively low for the number of games you are getting, not to be fooled into thinking the games are worthless because of the cost.

I am not mistaken about the cost of postage, YOU misunderstood me. The Orange Box, if you look, can be had for £12.85 DELIVERED.. not £12.99 but even then you have to WAIT for delivery.. my point was, that no courier can offer IMMEDIATE DELIVERY for £4.
