PC Gaming With a Controller

So, I bought an Xbox Series X controller in order to play Nier Automata which just feels right in comparison to a mouse and keyboard and I was wondering... Are there any other PC titles which are best played with a controller?

What do you guys play with?

I pretty much play most my games on controller. More recently FPS ones also, though mostly on COD which allows cross platform play.

There are few games I will still use K/B and M for, MMO's, RTS, city builders etc.

For that reason, I prioritized updating my Living room HTPC for gaming as I just can just chill on couch.

I pretty much use a controller for all chill games so i can sit back and play. kb/m is for fps games or anything with lots of keys like arma. Seems to be the comfiest for me.

i use a controller for most my games even fps in fact the only time i use a mouse and keyboard is when playing civ 6 etc or football manager. just much prefer a controller.

I started playing everything controller 5 years ago, but after mastering m & kb I always at least start of that way unless it is a driving or fighting game. I tried to play RDR2 with the controller as it felt better going around on horse back but I just can't stand aim assist now, especially when it would snap the screen around when on horse back after locking on to someone.

The analogue control of movement throughout the game world means I’ve used controllers for pc games for donkeys years now.

I can’t stand the w a s d always running **** that comes with digital only keyboard control. I want to be able to move leisurely if I want to. It’s such a basic fundamental of being more ‘in’ the game world that I’ve had ever since mario 64, and can’t go back.

The general rule of thumb is:

1st person: K&M
3rd person: Controller

Notable exceptions being 3rd person FPS games like Control which is K&M - in my opinion. :)

Depends on the game. Typically if it's First Person, I'll use a mouse and keyboard. If it's Third person I'll go grab my controller.

I can't imagine playing Assassin's Creed with M+KB just as I can't imagine (or rather wouldn't unless forced) play CoD with a controller

FPS really is fine with a controller, it's not as good but it's fine. Some of my most fun gaming moments have come from Halo on console and that didn't feel hampered by a controller. As I type this, I begin to realise it's probably got a great deal to do with each game's design.

That's one of the best things about PC gaming imo, you've tons of options:

Flight Sim/Flying -- HOTAS
Racing -- Wheel
Street Fighter style fighting game -- Fight/Arcade stick
Adventure/RPG/Platformers -- Gamepad of your choice
FPS/RTS -- Keyboard and mouse

Use whatever makes you happy, there's a multitude of variants for everything I've listed above. Personally I use K&M for most things, but I love kicking back on the couch in front of a nice big TV with an xbox controller when I'm playing an RPG or some such.

Pad and mouse is worth a try, but doesn't work in all games depending on how the pad is recognised. You need to use a KB to gamepad emulator.

Apart from RTS, gamepad always for me. I don't like the bumpers on the XB1 controller but really like the 360. I bought joy2key as it's really good software. I have different profiles for each game. Can use combo buttons to act differently giving up to 32 different buttons. Also double/tripple tap buttons to give multiple keyboard button emulation on top of the 32. Being able to fine tune aim acceleration and sensitivity is great too for FPS. It does macros too, but haven't used them.

I've disconnected my controller because I was tired of games defaulting to it. In a couple of cases, a game would not allow anything other than a controller if a controller was connected. So I disconnected mine.

I have some permanent thumb damage caused by the fact that controllers are fundamentally unsuited to human anatomy. So obviously I avoid them now. I only ever used them for racing games anyway as KB+M is superior for everything else unless the game is designed to force people to use a controller. Except maybe flight sims, which are far better played with a HOTAS setup anyway.

I've yet to encounter a game that has a walk mode if you attach a controller and doesn't have a walk mode if you don't attach a controller. That's a very strange game design. Who would make a game like that and why?
