PC getting owned by DiRT

When i started playing I found the controls really imprecise and dodgy aswell, I used to just bumble along knocking off the walls and running off the track until i passed the finish line (with a seriously duffed up car :p ). But i've found as I've got more practice in I have learned the subtleties of the controls and how to throw the car's weight into a corner properly, and as a result I'm getting much better times and my replay videos look more impressive! You just have to accept it's not an arcadey style game where you barrel along at 100 miles an hour all the time.

I love the game anyway now that I am not bad at it! Just managed to get my maximum distance travelled without crashing up over 30 miles :D
hmm, not sure about the arcade argument. Richard Burns Rally's handling's twitchy but feels like a simulation. DiRT is twitchy but doesn't feel right somehow. Maybe I just need more practise or my settings need tweaking. Can anyone explain what the linearity setting does?

If anything use a 360 controller it's automatically mapped perfectly to every button.

Interestingly I played the demo on a 360 controller and for some reason it didn't feel the same as playing the demo on the 360 (same track with the impreza) Whether this is due to sensitivity difference I don't know.

Interestingly it also ran a lot better on the 360 as well. Whilst the framerates are technically higher on my pc (E4300 @ 3ghz / 8800GTS) the game felt smoother on the 360.

EDIT: Zytok - slightly off topic but my system is virtually identical to yours :p :), apart from the fact I am 150mhz down on the cpu clock.

What voltage are you putting throught the E4300 if you won't mind me asking.

Just playing on medium mode and man, this game feels like I'm driving on rails! Think I need to up the difficulty but sadly the AI is already quite hard to beat on medium for me :(

Still enjoyable though :)

Thats not right, i'm on a 2.8ghz 3700+ sandy here with an 8800GTS 640, 1gb ram, I run at 1440x900, all settings to max, 2xMS and I get never under 30fps on the 2 tracks in the demo apart from the buggy one which goes down to a minimum or 17fps. my average is around 35 fps apart form the buggy track too.

Not right? What you've said pretty much matches my results.... 17fps min. I found that game settings made hardly any difference, I was hoping running everything on low would improve performance considerably but it doesn't.

Finally got my C2D rig setup this week (mobo was DOA) so will try again for comparison to see if I was cpu limited with an A64.

Pu your gear ratios to 2, makes it easier.

Just installed this with the new patch, running Ultra @ 1680x1050 4xAA, getting 30fps constant :D , runs great so smooth at this FPS you really wouldnt need any more. Amazed at the fact that performance is unaffected if i switch from 2xAA > 4xAA they both get a constant 32fps :D , bloody awesome game, all ran on an HD2900XT

The game seems quite badly coded, is it just me or do the cars have terrible handling aswel ? Nothing like the first colin mcrae game back in the day :p

yea noticed that too, very odd handling, the braking on the subaru is not right too, wasn;t like that on my subaru either. also the subaru in the game seems to be very slow, takes ages to get to 70mph and its rally spec, the one i had was a bottom of the range 54plate subaru turno 221bhp and 0-60 in 5.7s and it seems to be quicker than the one in the game.

no realism at all.

on a plus side the damage to the cars looks real nice and the buggy races i find the best.

Subaru takes 4.25 seconds to get to 70 on damp tarmac. Check to see if the pad is calibrated. There's a bar on the side of rev meter to show how much the accelerator is depressed. When I started the game, full throttle on my pad only took it to about 90-95% so I adjusted the saturation to 90% and now 100% throttle on the pad gives 100% in the game.

ahh excellent, it was the pad, did the same thing, set saturation to 95% now when i floor it, it really does floor it. the subaru in the game does seem quicker then then one i used to have now. :D

With everything on high the game runs smooth until doing the rallycross events and buggy events with more cars, I had to drop the multisampling from 4x to 2x . It doesn't really look any different but nows it's really smooth. (everything else maxed with 4x anti aliasing @ 1280x1024)

Been playing with my wheel, I just had to play around with the steering linearlarity to get it spot on - no need to go to the Gym now..it's so frantic - I love it! :p The way I have to go like a nutcase at the wheel flicking it into opposite lock etc is just like how you'd be for real.

Hill climb events are awesome.

Pikes peak in the old audi quattro is just amazing. 5 or 6 minutes of pure madness!

The brakes on the car's are too good and quite often I find myself slowing more than I'd like so now I have one of my paddles on the wheel for the handbrake and just give it a few clicks to get the back end out.

Full linearity will stop the game accelerating your steering.

Full linearity x1 x1 x1 x1 x1 the movement of the wheel/pad
Low linearity x1 x2 x4 x6 x8 the movement of the wheel/pad the more you turn the more it will add.
