I want to share a hard disk over the INTERNET with a friend I have a spare hard disk which I want to make accessible to him. I'm running windows but he's using mac I found this but would this work on the mac and if one of the comps is turned off would we have to reconnect. If this wouldn't work for any reason has anybody got anymore suggestions. Thanks in advance!!!

My prefered version would be FTP.

Access accross the internet will be too slow for any heavy duty usage buy you could run and FTP server from your PC with a password which he could just log straight into. With the correct permissions you can drag and drop files into it just like a local drive.

Finally got the shuttle working? What kind of files do you want to share? Sharing an entire hard drive is an odd request.

FTP stands for file transfer protocol, it would involve you setting your PC as a file server, then giving your friend your IP address and they would be able to access the files like they were on the local machine, only increadably slowly. This can all be done for free as there is plenty of software that allows your machine to become and FTP server. However, becuase you are asking what FTP is, this might be a long and complicated route.

What kind of size files are we talking, it might be easier buy a memory stick, putting the files on it, and posting it to him, then he posts it back. Like I say, depends on the files.

Yeah I don't know what sort of files proberly songs that sort of size. Thanks for your concerns about my shuttle yeah got it working fine if not a little hot! The stock CPU cooler's bollacks! I also like your sarcasam but I think I would rather find another electronic route! Is there any other way?

I wouldn't bother, the performance will be awful. Broadband is rubbish at uploading, i can download at 1mbps and a struggle to be able to upload 100Kb/s. thats only 12.5KB/s or 0.125 megabytes per second. FTP is only good for small files and uploading to webspace.

You could get yourself a NAS like a QNAP with built-in FTP server and web server. Put the files you want to share on there and you main PC doesn't even need be switched on for someone else to access them.
