PC has just died

My PC has started to play up tonight, so I've had to borrow my brothers mac to post this :rolleyes:

I built it at the beginning of 2006, it is overclocked, though I did it so long ago I can remember what I did.

NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard
G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 (2x1GB) CAS3 Dual Channel Kit
Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower (Socket 939/754/478/775) CPU Cooler
BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache

I tried to turn it on tonight and the fans spin up for about 2 seconds then stop, though the power supply fan keeps spinning.
I've ripped it down to the bare guts, even taking out the CPU and RAM but the symptons stay the same.
On the motherboard there are 4 debug lights, which 3 flash then 4, though I havn't downloaded the motherboard manual yet.

I'm really hoping it's not the motherboard

look up the codes mate ,do you get differant codes with bits removed/added?

Yea try manual first for the codes, then try resetting cmos.

I'm going to borrow a power supply from work tomorrow just to confirm that's o.k.

I managed to download the manual but it doesn't really go into detail about the diagnostic LED's other then they show the current state of the system

1: VGA detected
2: DRAM detected
3: CPU detected
4: System start up

The current beep pattern is 4,4,3,4 then it shuts down. I though this might suggest something with the CPU, but when I removed the RAM and the beep pattern stays the same.
I've also reset the bios with no success.

Since things are looking a bit bleak I'm going to make a new thread about a new build, just incase the problem is the motherboard. Been looking for an excuse to make a new machine for sometime now and was hoping to do it in the new year...be careful what u wish for.

have you tryed without the cpu mate (to see if they change)

reseat teh CPU, also try another powersupply, can you get hold of another CPU to make sure its not it playing up which would put blame on the mobo and you will be lucky to find a work 939 now

I just brought a 300W PSU back from work, which unfortunately is the only PSU we had in stuck. Sadly it doesn't have the right connections in any case, 1 of the connectors on the motherboard needs 8 pins, while the PSU only has 4.

I've tried reseating the PSU and removing it, but the fault stays the same.

I can't easily get my hands on a new socket 939 CPU or motherboard and if even if either of those 2 are faulty, I'd be far more interested in a new build.

Think the next step I'm goning to take is order in a proper PSU and if that doesn't work, I'll just use it in the new build.
On that note can any1 recommend a decent PSU?

well from your debug sequence, it looks like either all of your memory is buggered or your d ram slots on your board is buggered, doesnt look like it get see any of your memory?

You just reminded me I had some old 512mb sticks lying around, but sadly, they didn't change the symptons.

I was in the same position with my AMD 3200+ System. It died and I got ****ed off so I smashed the computer to pieces which involved me upgrading.

But it was for the best!

The 4 pin connectors on the PSU should still cope with the dual core no issues. You can only install them one way.

Ive seen this before with dodgy PSUs.

If your going to get a enw one then a Corsair, Be Quiet or PC Power&cooling (if you can find one) is a good shout. OCZs have served me well too.

Thanks for all the replies, but I think I'm going to bite the bullet and work on building a new machine.
I was planning on doing it in the new year, but I might as well do it now rather then trying to keep ol' Betsy alive for a few more months

Do as you said, get the PSU first to test this and use in your new machine.. Corsair or tagan are the ones to shoot for.

Ordered myself a Corsair 650W PSU.

All going well, it'll arrive tomorrow and work.
Worse case scenario I place an order for a new build to arrive saturday.
