PC -> HDTV Which cable

Yes i have one myself works fine.

But with mine theres some black bars around the picture unless i put the refresh rate to 50hz *shrug*, would be interested to know whether you get the same thing.

black bars would indicate not running at the same resolution as the screen,, i think..

have you tried playing around with the res ?

also, do you have overscan and underscan options on your graphics card?

VGA is far more flexible and you shouldn't get any overscan/underscan issues, it will look a lot better on text.

sorry to butt in but i connect via vga to my hdtv and get bars at top and bottom of my screen when watching xvids from my pc,
how can i stop this?

Sums it up really no matter what i tryed with dvi to hdmi it never looked right either overscan or underscan and this is supposed to be new fandangled technoglogy its way over rated in my opinion, connect with dvi-dsub adaptor/connector through vga (1366x768) on tv its perfect :D

you haven't mentioned which hdtv you've got really! not all of them are pc friendly

for example my lg lc2d does 1360*768 over hdmi at 60hz with 1:1 pixel mapping. thats about as good as it gets. looks very good too
sid

i have a Sony KDFE50A12 50"

vga only does 1024x768 but HDMI does 1920 x 1080

after playing around with the settings and making the icons larger, it doesnt look too bad now over HDMI...

Have you actually tested other resolutions?

My JVC officially only supports 1024x768 but runs 1360x768 perfectly

Make sure its set to 60Hz then try resolutions as close as possible to the native of the screen.

Just got the Samsung Z419 HD CRT. Want to connect my Radeon 9800 Pro via DVI to the HDMI on the telly. What sorta cable should I be looking at? IE: DVI male or female etc. Don't really know much about DVI tbh. Is that one posted okay?

Done a bit of research. HDMI looks to be 19 pin and male (usually) on most of the cables I've looked at. Now the back of my Radeon 9800 Pro DVI is female, with 24 pins and a block of 4 around a cross. Would that be (on the cable) 24 + 5 pins male as most cables I look at are 24 + 5 or 18 + 1?

I think - and hopefully someone will confirm - that I need a HDMI 19 pin male to a 24 + 5 pin DVI male cable.

that would be my GUESS. I'm looking into this issue now, as i can either get a 26" LCD TV or 22" PC monitor. Both have pros and cons, so i'm a little unsure what to do...

Well I managed to get a cable for about £5 inc delivery. 24+5 DVI -> 19 HDMI, 2m long. Looked at picture of the Radeon 9800 Pro and counted the pin holes, and I didn't see a HDMI cable that wasn't 19 pin so I think I'm safe. If it's really good, I may convert the PC to an uber-quiet HTPC in a Samsung-style case and buy some gold plated connectors :D
