Okay so today I got a new cooler for my system, an Arctic Freezer 7 Low Profile. So I take my old intel one out, no problems. I start to assemble the new cooler and everythings going fine so far, when it comes to pushing the pins in they were surprisingly difficult. It started to eat into my fingers, so I decided to use a 5p coin to push them down. 3 of the 4 pins went in, however one went in and then the end snapped off after it had clicked in. So, I thought no biggy, its in there pretty stiff. I gave it a bit of a shake and pull and it wouldn't move. I then did a bit of general dusting with a soft cotton cloth as it hadn't been done since I first built it the Christmas before last. So, I put the front of the case back on and plugged it all in.
Now this is where the problem lies. Everything looked good for the first few seconds, it booted up as normal and got to post showing my CPU speed etc. After about 5 seconds it suddenly shut down and I haven't been able to power it up since.
I did a little bit of troubleshooting. I had a spare cpu on hand so I inserted that to test whether the cpu had fried, however it would stilll not boot up. I came to the conclusion that it couldn't be the gpu as I had a screen to look at when it started up. It can't be the cpu surely as I tried a different one and still no luck booting.
So I came to the conclusion that there's either a short circuit somewhere, the motherboard has died or the psu has died. Of course, I could be wrong, I'm no expert on the subject. But if the motherboard had died when I was putting the cooler on, would it have even booted up? Same with the psu, I find it hard to believe they suddenly died, unless I'm forgetting something obvious.
I'm in a real dilemma now, ofcourse. My original plan was to strip everything off and lay it out on my desk. Without any hardware in, one by one replace each part until something goes wrong. Now to do this I would need to somehow prise the cpu cooler off the motherboard and replace it with the stock intel one. The problem with doing this is that once off, it is effectively only going to be working with 3 pins, which isn't good. I can try and blag a new pin from the manufacturer or something if thats even possible.
The other option is taking it to a local PC repair store. The only problem I have with this is that if they come back to say somethings wrong, then I'd have to pay the service charge plus the price for new hardware. Even if its something simple I could have fixed, theres still a service charge to pay on top. I know it sounds so simple, but as a cash strapped student its really not money I have at all.
Bit of an essay but I'm getting pretty desperate to fix it. I'm pretty 'annoyed', to say the least that something like a cpu cooler has done this. Although it could be something on my end, where I've just dived straight in with what seemed a simple swap around job.
So any ideas? I'd like to go into tommorow with a more experienced view on how I should go about fixing this.
Thanks. ^^
