Absolutely baffled as to what is wrong with my PC, wondered if anyone could offer some advice.

Switched it on last week and the fans kicked in, lights on mobo, lights on PSU but the monitor wouldnt come on.

Thought it must be the gfx card, tried this in another PC and it worked ok. Tried it with various memory configs (and with none in at all) but still the same.

Tried a different gfx card and also a different PSU but still wouldnt work so thought it must be the motherboard. Ordered a new one and installed last night but still the same - the fans kicked in, lights on mobo, lights on PSU but the monitor wouldnt come on.

Could it be the CPU?

Spec is:
i7 920 (not overclocked)
Asus P6T deluxe (replaced by an Asus sabertooth but same thing happens)
6 x 2gb ddr
ATI 4870 1gb

On another note, would I be able to return the motherboard to OCUK if its not the problem?

Thanks,
Ash

It might sound daft, but are you sure the monitor is working? Might be worth trying a different screen and cable to rule them out.

You'll have to contact the shop directly about the unwanted motherboard.

As for your problem, are there any BIOS bleeps when the machine starts? Do you have an internal speaker attached?

You said you tried a different monitor, but did you try a different cable? [edit- was typing this as above posts where made]

My guess it would be the motherboard but if you have swapped this out, then it could be the memory controller on the CPU.

Have you got a speaker you can butcher to connect to the board to see if its spitting out any errors? Take it there's no diagnostic LEDs on the boads you have?

Tried with different ram completely? Last time I had a build that wouldn't power on at the screen it was because of the ram - but booting it ramless made no beeps either so I originally assumed it was the motherboard which it was not.

Got 6 sticks, tried it with 6, 1 and none in. Will give it a go with each one tonight. Thanks :)

Can possibly get a speaker from another case, got a few old ones in the garage.

There are leds on the board, from what I recal when booting last night they all came on (red)...

Had a play about with it and noticed that on the back of the 4870 red leds are flashing. The sabertooth board leds are all on also (red) for mem, cpu, vga.

tried my old board and same with the leds on the gfx card. reading further into this I found this:

LEDS on HD4870 cards

D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed

D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed

D601 - Red LED On, shows critical Core power fault

Both connectors are connected so cant be that issue.

Is it possible the PSU is the issue?

also tried a spare speaker and get no beeps regardless of config. no cpu/mem/gfx. does nothing on either my old possibly knackered board and the brand new sabertooth

Tried another PSU in it and its come on (with my old board). Mad, tried it with another PSU at work and it still wouldnt post. Looks like the new board is going back. Anyone recommend a good PSU :p
