PC issue - major one, struggling

No, I did have a speaker to plug in but I cannot find it. I've changed everything, all main components - only thing I haven't tried is CPU. But to replace the CPU would cost loads so hoping that isn't the issue. Just wracking my brain to find out. Thanks for suggestions though.

Right, I've got a speaker for the new MB and it beeped constantly, so pulled out the RAM, swapped it for some new stuff. I rebooted it without the DVD drive or hard drive plugged in, with one stick of RAM only. It went to POST. I then put hard drive and optical drive in, and it wouldn't post. I unplugged both of them and redid exactly what I did for it to go to post. It wouldn't post, and there was just a single beep from the speaker which according to the motherboard means all is well. I had a friend come round today and he's well into PCs too (he brought the mobo speaker) and he was perplexed. This is a right tough cookie to solve.

have you visually inspected the CPU at all? Taking off the heatsink and then re-seating it? As others have mentioned, have you reset the CMOS? Either by removing the battery or following the manual for your board to clear the CMOS.

The fact that it POSTed and now doesn't with the exact same connections points to something not connected quite right to me.

yes. one of the things i'm thinking... if it's a big tower heatsink... those don't travel very well connected to the mobo!
