hiya folks,

PC running slow. So started to shut down browers etc ready for a reboot but didnt get to far before pc just shut off. Now wont run.

If I turn off PSU then turn back on I get a couple of MB lights then when I press the ON/OFF button the main light flickers once and the fans twitch. But still nothing.

PSU or MB any Ideas.

Cheers and merry xmas
Matt

Hey merry xmas. This sounds like the PSU has gone. PSU I would try first as it is usually the most likely if a system will only twitch on the fans and lights flicker. Hope this helps.

that indicates a short circuit, what id say (this happend to an am2 asus deluxe of myne the other day)
if you have a psu tester or multimeter check the voltages.
if not try unplugging the cpu power (4 or 8pin) on the motherboard, if everything starts to spin up it sounds like a motherboard problem (but if you have spare psu test it with that as well)

exactly the same thing on my asus, turned out to be the mobo. what a lovely christmas present youre pc gave you
happy christmas :)

cheers guys. I'll stick a meter across it later. I'd rather the PSU rather than MB.

I cant sync my new galaxy nexus with outlook until its working.

Resetting the cmos didnt do anything but I've not tried the one stick of ram. (what will that prove).

you tried pulling out the cpu power connector (4 or 8pin) and then pressing the on switch?
would indicate 12v on the psu being bad or a bad motherboard, my money's and the board to be honest

the board ive got did not give me any beep codes yet when i plugged in teh 4pin the power supply would detect a short, or there is not enough 12v for the board (12v is gone)

i know it sounds stupid but try it

when your machine wont start you try everything including removing everything that isnt 100% necessary to start it...1 ram stick is all you need.
if it starts with 1 you know where your problem lies if it dont the thats something ruled out

Ok I've been out for a few hrs come back and tried it again. I know clutching at straws.

But.

It came back on.

So something isn't right. But its not terminal...YET.

I've done nothing different to what I did 4 hrs ago. I thought it maybe heat related so I left it for over an hour earlier today but still nothing. So whats likely to have happened in the last 4 hrs.

I left it with the PSU switched off. Thats all.

HHmmm.

hmm, could be a psu issue then, may try my motherboard again soon, also could have a warm boot issue, but id leave it until it happens again, you will find the source sooner or later
