Hiya

Despite me currently having a new spec PC on the way, i'm getting increasingly frustrated with my current rig as it seems I can't go an hour without it completely locking up on me.

For instance, I might be just surfing the net and all of a sudden it will just completely freeze. I've tried not running certain applications to see if they were the cause but I can't seem to determine where the problem is.

Nothing will happen at all, it wil just completely lock up, mouse will not move, CTRL+ALT+DEL will not work either, my only option is to restart. It started doing this about a week ago periodically but it's starting to get more and more frequent. Also if I lock Windows when i'm going out, when I come back it will have frozen.

I have thought it could be lack of memory? Could this be the case?

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

A few things I would suggest:

  • Download Microsoft memory tested or Memtest x86 and let it run and see if there is any errors
  • Boot it into the BIOS and leave it running to see if it freezes. If it does then you are looking at a hardware issue.
  • Check the Event viewer under Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

Personally i would have said borked windows and a re install is needed.
This would be my last resort though after i checked my temps my rails and every single connection possible.
Also i would virus and spyware sweep like it was going out of fashion.
After all this crap if it still froze i would re instal.

Yes mate untold hassle reboots config sorting downloading and a complete nightmare.
The light at the end of the tunnel is a fresh instal is super slick and very speedy. I did it myself last week and with the help of SP2 on disk and numerous prepared Data discs it wasn't as bad as it sounds.
