As the title says really, my PC keeps restarting when I boot it up.

I'll get the normal Gigabyte S-series screen, then it flashes to the black screen momentarily that shows all the controllers etc, this is all normal, then at this point it restarts all over again, I think this is the point where XP normally kicks in .

Any suggestions on trying to diagnose the problem.

GA-965P-DS3 mobo
X1900 XT
Geil DDR2 pc6400
Intel Core2 1.6
can't remember HD

btw I can't even get into safe mode as it restarts immediately the menu option shows up

So the system reboots just as it gets to the XP loading screen?

Have you updated the bios? Have you ran the bios at stock settings? Have you tried single sticks of memory? Have you tried reseating hardware?

Can you boot from the Windows CD and perhaps try a Windows Repair? I'm not sure, but this shouldn't delete anything on the hdd does it??? But I'd try the above before this as it's kind of "last resort" if you will.

I'd go for what Andrew says, stock/default settings and try again. Perhaps a CMOS reset as well. :)

Things have gone from Bad to worse, I left the machine rebooting over and over while I left the room for a while, when I came back the screen was off and the PC was on with the fans going, but nothing else, not even restarting itself.

Not even keeping the PC button depressed for 5 seconds switches it off, and when I do restart it from the mains power, the PC lights and fans come on and that's it, nothing on the screen at all, no beeps nothing.

So I can't test anything, I made sure nothing is lose in side etc.

Do youself a favour and take everything out of your case. Put all your componants down on a bench (just to make sure its fine not in your case so componants are easier to swap and inspect) and connect the following (Motherboard, power supply, graphics card, processor, memory). Use a screw driver or something to turn it on (by touching the two on/off pins on the header. See what it does but make sure you reseat everything. Also make sure you reset the bios as I said in my above post. Then come back with results.

You could also try removing plug from power socket, clear CMOS in the usual way (as mentioned before), leave the plug out of socket for 20-30mins, then put it back in, power up etc, and see if that sorts the problem. :)

Everythings out on the desk, I reconnected GFX, CPU/fan, RAM, monitor.

When I switched the power supply on the CPU and gfx fans started up, this is the same problem. The monitor shows nothing, doesn't power up or anything, there is no beeping from mobo either. Not sure how to turn on/off mobo manually, is there a link or detailed explanation, I'm currently touching each of the outside pins (3 pins) of the power on the F-panel with screwdrivers.

Thanks

Have you got any spare componants? This could result in a very painful but slow RMA process and I would advise you to find someone with componants to try.

I had a similar problem once, it would restart before getting to windows several times before it got there, then it seemed fine. Just a problem when starting up for some reason. The PSU stopped working not long after this started happening, and hasn't done it again on a new one. Not sure if this is the same as your problem though.

I asked at work and they have no compatible componants for me to test with.

Is standard warranty 1 year, I can't find anything on the Gigabyte site for RMA's and overclockers don't stock it anymore, I suspect it's the motherboard, but I bought it Sep'06.
