Hi

When i boot up my 2nd pc my router disconnects. It doesn't matter if My pc is connected to router by cable or not it still switches it off...could this be a power issue in my psu....it has only started being a problem in the last few weeks. I have tried new mains power cable and a new lan cable but it has made no difference...the pc is plugged into a belkin surge protector extension lead and so 4 things are being powered from the same wall socket, the router is powered from a different wall socket but still gets disconnected from the internet...any ideas what the problem is

That's a strange one. I wonder if the switching frequency of the PSU in the PC is somehow interfering with the PSU of the router and causing an instability.

It could actually be a fault with the PC PSU where it's not properly filtering the power properly. Normally inside ATX PSU there are large film capacitors and other devices that filter the incoming AC supply, if one of those is kaput it may allow high frequencies back into the ring main circuit. Distance between the two PSUs on the ring main, or even separate circuit might also help to diagnose as it's likely that the high frequency, if that's what it is, won't travel very far.

I had a similar problem with an LCD monitor which caused the ADSL connection to drop whenever the monitor came out of standby. I presume it was a fault on the SMPS generating enough mains-borne noise to affect the adsl router.

I'm not convinced that putting distance between PSUs would help much at adsl frequencies if it's mains-borne, otherwise homeplugs which operate at much higher frequencies wouldn't work.

If you've got an am radio you could see if the suspected PSU generates a lot of noise compared to your other PC.

True that.

The OP could try an alternate power supply for the router and see if it can stabilise the power delivery to the router. Should only be a few quid.

One question though. When the router drops connection does it restart from scratch or just cause the ADSL to drop.

it loses internet connection and the lights go out and it resets itself.....lose connection for a couple of minutes tops.....is it not the pc power supply causing it or do you think it is the router psu....just saying because it only happens when the pc boots up

Ah, I hadn't twigged that the router actually rebooted, which seems a bit extreme for mains-borne noise.

Is your pc connected to the router via wifi or ethernet cable? If it's wired, try unplugging from the router it and then turning on the problem pc (or if wireless, then disable wifi on the pc or router and power on). If it doesn't reboot the router then it would seem to rule out mains-borne noise.
