PC locks up for no apparent reason

Just uninstalling zone alarm and once it had finished the computer just turned itself off without any warning :S

This computer has run flawlessly for 4 months, what have i done!!?
 
Did you uninstall it using control panel > add or remove hardware or just deleted the folder ?
And after uninstall anyways it will probably try to reset, doesnt it boot up after ?
 
It just turned itself off, and yes i uninstalled it properly. Ive just uninstalled Itunes, Zonealarm, installed Avast and it found a Trojan in something called Webhancer (not a clue what this was or where it came from) during the bootup scan.

I'm reverting back to iTunes 6 as there are some known problems with 7 which cause crashing.

As for tht service, it had already been disabled. Defrag has also been done on all drives.

Ill run memtest tonight when i hit the sack aswell. Cheers for the help guys. Anything else i should check?
 
If itunes and ZA are uninstalled ( reboot after each ) and after thorought scan with archive files included it doesnt find anything anymore, moreover you switched off this service as well, then ill probably running out of ideas. Does it show in task manager which process exactly takes up the CPU ?
 
Right i finally got around to checking the Volts the RAM is getting compared to the rated voltage. On the memory it says 2.1v but in the bios it was only running at 1.8, could this be part of the problem?

Yeh if it says on sticks 2.1 then you should set to it, also check the timings and set them to those on sticks also.

BTW do you still get this 'CPU overloading' after uninstalling ZA and itunes or its just freezing left ?
 
No CPU overloading but still freezing and lots of HDD access. Ive just tried playing several videos in WMP and it played for a few seconds then a box pops up saying
'Windows Media Player does not detect any storage media in the selected device. Insert media into the device.'

Disconnect any USB devices u got apart from mouse, reset, and check if anything happens.

So there is no more CPU usage ? just hdd working all the time etc ?
Damn this is starting to get strange ;].
 
VLC has started only playing audio, if i try to play video i get another couple of minutes of freezing weirdness! Ive been keeping task manager open and apart from system idle process nothing is even going above 2 or 3 percent with regards CPU. I have been getting a few Cyclic Redundancy Check error things when extracting rar archives which is weird

I really need to be getting on with my assignments aswell:( Ah well its all backed up if everything goes **** up.

Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

This comes up every time i try to rescue my itunes music folder :(
 
Having to go through my music album and copy a few albums at a time as it keeps throwing up the cyclic error message if i do loads. :(
 
After downloading SeaTools it turns out my hard driveis the offender here. Fails all the read tests :( which isn't good as i have assignments in for friday! Ive sent an email to Seagate (maxtor drive but owned by seagate?) but i doubt this is gunna be a quick turnaround :(

Its starting to get a little bit messy :/.
I'm sorry but I dont really have anymore ideas ans it's pretty hard to troubleshoot the problem if you never really seen it exactly :). Maybe you forgot something or did something else on the way ? There are really a lot of minor factors that could mess up this.

I would play around a bit ( you can enable some of the options that you have disabled earlier and check whats happening etc ) and let me know if u found out anything else.

If nothing works there is always /format c:/ :-).

I have found the issue, the Hard Drive is knackered. After only 4 months of owning it :(

I'm glad that at least we got to it somehow, would never thought of a hardrive. Im afraid there is nothing I can help you with at this point.

I'm now using a new 320gb drive on the same cable and port with no issues whatsoever. Now to get this Maxtor drive back to Seagate for replacement! Cheers guys.

Hi Robjf,

I recently had problems with two 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax 21 HDDs. The first I got changed via Dabs.com and the other I ran the Seagate Diagnostic tools on which now reports the drive as being fine. I haven't check it out on the machine yet but will be doing shortly. Just waiting for a new PSU, Case and DVDRW to arrive.
There are loads of utilities on the Seagate website for checking drives. It may be worth giving them a try out.
 
CRC errors - then you hard disk is borked. Or at least the data on it is. Work out who made your hard disk, then go to the website for their test utilities. Do a scan with them and see what is reported.

Is SMART monitoring enabled in your BIOS? If not, turn it on.

As a quicky check - download Speedfan and see what it says about your SMART details on that hard disk. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
