I've been keeping my pc lying on its side for the past few months. But recently my psu has started to make horrific amounts of noise. So Im going to replace it. However my question is whether having my pc lying on its side, will this damage any of the components?

If it's just the psu fan then you could just replace it. Provided you discharge the caps and don't go sticking a screwdriver in there it's a simple job.

In some respects having a case horizontal is better for heat management, provided the motherboard is closest to the floor anyway.

how hard is it to replace the fan, and what kind of fan would i need?

Also it sounds like the fan is grinding against the grilling of the psu, would replacing the fan sort this?

i have replaced a fan on my psu a seasonic 600w which is basically a corsair 600 :L

anyways i replaced the standard fan with a antec 120mm blue led one to match my case and bits and it was a straight forward thing to do, only thing i had to do was to place the 3 pin on the fan to a 2 pin and that was it, if it is making a noise on the grill then just remove the grill

+1 if its grinding on the grill it might be because its on its side, remove the grill and cabletie any wires out the way and dont go poking inside there whilst its switched on :P

Yes explore why the fan is grinding against the grille and resolve it. If it's unbalanced itself then swap the fan. I put a scythe s-flex 1600 in mine where the stock was a noname 2000rpm. Some fans don't like being in a horizontal plane due to their bearing type but the s-flex are fine with it.

How do you discharge the caps ?

The power button method is probably a little safer than licking them ;)

My psu's (ocz) fan header was hot glued/epoxied in situ so I needed to strip wires and solder my fan in but still would call this a simple 5 minute job done without removing psu fully from case, I didn't even unplug it from mobo.

I've just pulled the psu out and had a fiddle around with the grill. Eventually I used a screwdriver to bend the grill away from the fan - probably not a recommended method, but worked nevertheless. Noise has thankfully gone, but I think it may only be a temp fix.
