I installed a new heat sink and the computer ran fine, I put lid on the computer while it was running and it sparked. The pc shorted and turned off. Now the monitor wont turn on and it makes 2 beeps when it turns on. I think this are memory errors.
- Monitor works with other Pcs
- Integrated Graphics card
- RAM Worked before
- Tried a graphics card still didn't work

Please help as it was a birthday present from my mum! :'(

Misleading title tbh, nothing to do with the monitor.

Do you have the manual for the PC or the motherboard?

They have a section to diagnose the beeps.

Please tell me you fitted the heatsink whilst it was not running?

Did you ground yourself before messing with pc?
Did you make sure motherboard went on all motherboard stand offs correctly?

Try one stick of ram at a time and see what you get.

Hi, Im new to forums really sorry. This was factory built :(
Ive reseated all RAM in each slot. And of course I didn't install heat sink when pc was running

Acer Aspire M3400
AMD Athlon II X3 - All I can tell you that seperates it from searches. As there are this model but phenom version.

So you placed the case side back on and saw it sparked? Oh boy sounds like you killed something... Let's just hope it's only the PSU that died. Got a spare PSU you can try?

According to what probably is the manual two beeps indicates:

  • CMOS Damaged.
  • CHOS checksum error or CMOS battery loss occurs
Which isn't particularly helpful.

I’d suggest that you try a BIOS reset.

You could try hotwiring the PSU (Google is your friend here) to check it’s still working.

If that doesn’t work own up before you do anymore damage. You may be covered by a warranty and/or insurance.

A PC can power on even if it's in a horribly broken state, it proves nothing. You can get a PC to this state even with several key components missing/broken.

Sparks and a shutdown is never going to be good.

Your currently getting an error beep code, so something is wrong.

If you have the spare parts available to isolate the problem then you've got a chance. If you haven't you've just got a potentially very expensive guessing game.

Yes, I put the side case back on and I thinked it touched something im not sure but there were three to for sparks then fans turned off and pc shut down. And about clearing the BIOS, Im not sure where the motherboard jumper is as I dont have the manual.

You should be able to work out what you could have possibly touched with the side panel.

Did these sparks result in the normal dead electronics smell? Give it a good sniff, especially around the PSU and report back.

If you can't find the bios reset jumper just remove the motherboard battery for a few minutes (with the mains disconnected).

Presumably you’re not wanting to admit that you broke your Birthday present by messing around with it? I hope you tried to modify it for a really good reason.

There are four options I can see:

  1. Sneak the PC out of the house to someone with the facilities and knowledge to properly diagnose the problem.
  2. Try to return it back to the physical state it was in before you started messing, and then claim it died all on its own. A rather dishonest option, and also potentially embarrassing if you get found out.
  3. Man up and admit to your Mother (or whoever) that you’ve broken it.
  4. Buy an identical PC and hide the broken one.

Yes, She knows what I was doing but I dont want to tell her its broken. So she went to the store and they said they'll send it off and the people will see if they can fix it and how much it will cost.

Yup ive replugged and tried each stick
