My current spec:

2500+ AMD Barton Core
A7n8x deluxe mobo
2x 512mb Geil PC3200
20GB Sata Drive
80GB Western Digital 7200rpm
Hercules 9800 pro

Could someone spec me up the best available upgrades that i could make to have all round good PC for capturing/compressing video footage, watching movies/tv series and general use.

Would it best for me to sell this system and buy a whole new one and add that too my budget? I really don't have a clue to be honest but my budget for a upgrade at the moment is roughly £400-£500, thanks in advance!

:D

Hmmmmm - Toughie!

With £500 to spend I personally would flogg all your present componets and start afresh. Have a good luck round on 'the bay' as a lot of us have sold or are selling our DX9 cards in order to buy the new BFG 8800 GTS

Do you have a monitor and case?

You could sell that system and add another £200 to the budget I would have thought. Possibly £250. Ask friends, family see if anyone needs a new pc or something.

That way you could afford a decent Core 2 Duo/8800 system that would be ready for Vista! :)

If you could get 150 for your current rig (sell individually, 2500XP and agp cards still go for plenty) then you could use the spec I just did for someone, comes in at just over 650 notes:-

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
(£111.61)

Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£82.24)

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)
(£72.84)

Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 NCQ 80GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (0A32727)
(£30.54)

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
(£193.86)

NEC AD7170S Serial ATA 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
(£22.31)

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
(£112.79)

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU
(£29.36)
Total : £668.42

I know someone that i could sell my current PC for around £150 so that wouldn't be a problem, i have a iiyama 21" CRT moniter atm. I've always been a AMD man so would be a little cautious going the intel route although i wouldn't rule it out completely, thanks for the help so far guys.

I was always an AMD man 2000XP followed by a 2800XP, and I was going to go for an Opty this time round, but then the C2D came out, and I just had to get one of those. :D

Really worth the switch, and it will ensure that AMD pull their boots up and make something nice for us to switch back to :)
