PC not always booting

Hi,

I'm hoping you can help with this - it's driving me mad.

OK, I have an ABIT AX-8 3rd eye motherboard. I have an intermittant problem were when I boot it up, it gets past the memory check and then hangs. The screen is blank except for the cursor in the top left. The LED on the motherboard shows the post code of "89" (which is apparantly assigning IRQ's to PCI devices and setting up ACPI table at the top of memory).

The only workaround is to turn the PC off and back on again - this time it boots fine.

A few weeks ago, after it became more interrmitant, it was suggested that the CMOS battery was at fault. I changed it and have had no problems for a few weeks. Yesterday it did it again.

I also have another issue, which may be related - when using hibernation or standby, after a few hours, the BIOS looses its settings and I have to reboot the PC to get them back again (I can spot this easily because the BIOS, by default, doesn't allow overclocking so the uGuru 3rd eye clock looses some of its display settings).

Any thoughts from anyone on what this one could be?

It's a custom build PC with an Athlon 64 3200+ processor topped with a Nexus AXP-6400 CPU fan, Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300Gb HD, HiPer Type R 480W PSU and a Sapphire X300 SE 32M graphics card.

Cheers
David.
