PC not booting and not turning off

Hello

I have a pc which is roughly 2 years old. I use it almost every day. This evening I turned it on and both lights on the front came on and the fans started but there was no beep and nothing else seemed to be happening. I opened the case and the CPU fan was spinning but quite weakly (could stop it with my finger). I couldn't turn the machine off or re-start it. The only way of powering it off was to switch off the psu.
Yesterday I noticed that the pc had re-booted itself when I left it on for a while and the day before that it completely froze up on me.

Power seems to be getting through to the gfx card as the led and fan are both on.

Anyone have any ideas? Is this a sign that the PSU is on it's way out?

Many thanks in advance

BM

Seems like your suggesting a lack of power and RAM issue...

run memtest to test your RAM failing that try replacing the PSU...

looks like dead CPU ;-) or mobo.
If ram was dead you will get beeps and if PSU was it wont power at all.

Is the graphic card doing the noisy fan startup ? I mean it goes at the start "swoooooooosh" or it just spins silently ? Do you get any screen at all ?

Hello

Yeah the GFX card's fan spins up to full speed from what I can see. I get no screen whatsoever, no beeps nothing. I tried removing 1 stick & then both sticks of RAM, still the same.
I'm going to borrow my sister's power supply this morning so that I can see if it's a PSU issue.
When I moved my pc out from under my desk I could hear a high pitched electrical whine coming from the psu when turned on then off again. I'm really hoping that it's that that's at fault. Will post back later today

I had exactly the same problem develop with my PC last week.
Been running prefectly for almost 3 years.

Then had a couple of lock ups during use, PC would suddenly shutdown and get stuck on black screen before bios with the front lights on and all the fans running. No beeps. Only way to power it down was to hold the power button down for a few seconds. Tried reinstalling XP, removing ram, unplaugging everything not needed, switching gfx cards, removed all dust, reseated CPU etc...Problems.

Once it had crashed and reset it would generaly not get past that black screen for an hour or so, If I left it then tried again it would start up. For some unknown reason it worked perfectly yesterday and I'm even using it right now...was pulling my hair out trying to get it to start up the day before.

...anyhow, most advice I got was to replace the PSU, so will like to know if it works out for you.

Afternoon

I borrowed a psu from my sister's pc. I couldn't connect the GFX card though as hers was an AGP whereas mine was a PCI-E.
I could connect the mobo and drives. The pc turned on, still no beeps. The fan on the cpu was spinning strongly as opposed to weakly before. I could power down the pc from the front button which I was unable to do before.
I think I'll try my psu in my sister's pc & see if it powers up.

Tried the psu in my sister's pc. Did absolutely nothing which was good as I could see that it was probably that causing the problem.....thing is though, I hooked my sister's psu back up to her machine and hers isn't powering on now (green led on mobo lights but nothing else happens). Hope my dodgy power supply hasn't wrecked 2 pcs!

Just to let you know, I tried a new corsair 650w power supply in mine and it still doesnt work. Must be the cpu / mb I guess. Oh well, about time I upgraded anyhow.
