PC not booting up

Hi folks,

My PC has stopped booting up and I'm not sure what the reason is.

Spec is an Antec 300, AMD Phenom II X4, 4Gb (Crucial) DDR3 1666 RAM, Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H, SATA 500gb, DVD-RW and a HIS HD 4890 1GB - all powered by a BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 650w. I purchased this second-hand and it's been working perfectly until yesterday.

Previously whenever I turned it on, the blue light would come on accompanied by a couple of seconds of fan noise which then quietened down as the PC booted up. Now however, the blue light still comes on but the fan noise is constant and the machine doesn't boot up at all, but just 'hangs' in this state. All the fans are on and I can open/close the DVD drive but there's no display or anything.

Any ideas what the cause of this might be? I'm not particularly technical so am thinking of getting it repaired at my local shop, however I'd really appreciate any advice you guys could give.

Many thanks.

The loudest fan is usually the graphics on card.

This start at 100% and then slows down as you boot into Windows and the fan profile kicks in.

Try re-seating the graphics card, try another one if you have it or see if you can use the onboard graphics.

Thanks Surveyor - I just tried that but didn't solve the problem.

Looked inside the case when I turned the power on and didn't notice any leds light up on the motherboard. Is this usually the case? Just to reiterate when I turn the power on, the fans for the case, psu, cpu cooler and graphics card all come on, plus I can open the DVD drive.

So does this mean that my PSU is fine but the motherboard is faulty? Cheers.

Hi There,

Did you manage to get a fix for this problem?

I'm experiencing similar issues - pretty sure it's my BeQuiet Dark Power 750W.

The no.1 culprit in this case is probably the PSU 12V rail. try another PSU. If same rpoblem, it's likely you'll nedda new MBoard.

It does sound like a PSU issue.

I assume that both of you have done a hard CMOS reset. Taking the battery out and clearing the CMOS jumpers. (I tend to remove the PSU lead from the wall too when doing a hard CMOS clear).

Yes, I have tried a couple of CMOS resets.

A few other posts say the 5V rail is at fault and suggest unplugging the power cable and holding the pc power switch on for 1 minute as a temporary fix. Will give this a try.

Unfortunately I don't have another psu to try so would have to buy another :(

Doesn't sound like BeQuiet's warranty repair is quick either!

I also had this problem with my BeQuiet Dark Power 750W, I had some cathode tubes in my system that was causing the psu to go into a fail-safe state. Removed the cathodes and it has been fine since, do you have any other parts connected to the psu?

Nothing unusual:

Asus P5q Pro
Core 2 Duo E7500
4GB RAM (4x1GB sticks)
GTX 295
2x internal SATA HDD
1x USB HDD
DVD-RW
3x case fans
Sound card
Wifi card

I'd try removing some parts so see if the issue still remains.

First the usb hdd (if you haven't already), sound card, wifi card, dvd drive, etc.

I tend to despise local repair shops, they'll probably tell you that you need to replace the PSU and motherboard even though it's neither.

Well I stripped the computer bare this afternoon - stripped it down to motherboard, cpu, 1 stick of RAM, graphics card only.
Took off all case fans, sound card, HDDs, DVDRW, Wifi card etc

No change.

Tried taking the power cable out and holding the power button for a minute - still wont boot.

Only way to clear it once it gets in this state is to leave the rear power switch off for up to an hour and then it boots just fine.

So I'm back to RMAing the PSU - what a pain!

Will I get away with a XFX 650W psu for the above spec?
Or maybe an OCUK Crusade 850W?

Need a cheap psu while the bequiet is off for repair
Obviously when the bequiet is repaired it will be back in the system instead.

Hi again,

Sorry to drag this topic up again but I still haven't resolved the problem in my original post.

I purchased a new motherboard bundle yesterday and installed it into my case. When I turn on the power, everything comes on (HDD, optical disk, case fans, power switch on case etc) except for the motherboard (GA-H61M-USB3-B3). No POST, display or anything. I've tried using the onboard DVI and my graphics card HDMI connectors.

The CPU fan is spinning ok but there are no beeps, LEDs from the board itself. This is exactly the problem I experienced with my old motherboard. Originally I thought the motherboard was faulty (which is why I bought the bundle yesterday) but is it possible that the psu is at fault with the 24pin connector not working, even though the rest of the psu is ok? Or could it be a problem with the bundle itself? I've tried disconnecting the graphics card, hard disk, dvd drive and taking out the cmos battery but no joy.

Thanks for any help.
