PC performance not as good as expected

Could you PC boffins have a look over my PC specs and tell me where it's letting me down please? I just got a nice new HD5850 and I expected my PC to be pretty rapid. There's some FPS issues with some games (ArmA2, natch).

Wondering also why Windows 7 reports my RAM as being so poor, I know the performance thing isn't to be trusted but take a look, really seems low:

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 B3 (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache
Mobo: Asus COMMANDO P965 Socket 775
GFX: Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB
Memory: Corsair 4GB (4x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory
PSU: Seasonic M12 700W Modular
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Thanks for any advice ;)

Did you really just start a thread about not getting the required performance, and then use Windows Performance Tests as evidence? Ahh yes, it appears you did.

Jesus wept.

Haha, like I said I know it's not the most effective tool, but in this case it did highlight a bottleneck :P

if you can recommend another testing proggy, i'd be happy to try it, see if it really is an issue.

My RAM gets 7.3 so i doubt its the RAM so much as the test.

The only difference is that its a 2x2 config vs the 4x1 you have, and maybe the clocks a bit.

It didnt highlight anything. Run some REAL apps and games and then make a judgement, anything else is noobishness of the highest order.

Really? But it's not G0 stepping, I always thought that was important? Any guides knocking about for overclocking, never done it with a CPU before. (stock fan).

Richdog: That's what I did, like I said I see some stuttering in games like ArmA2, not FPS loss however, just the game stuttering occasionally. I am not basing all this on the windows test.

run 3dmark vantage and post up screenshot of your scores, I expect your cpu score will highlight its the bottleneck, as Geckovich suggests clock it to 3+ should improve things, you will want an aftermarket cooler, and there is a guide in the OCing & Cooling subforum

just to show how bad widows score is
my pc spec is [email protected] 1066Mhz Kingston hyperX-ATI4850
hows a q6600 2.4Ghz rated better then a [email protected]

 i didnt kown it was as bad as this tho

Set the correct timings in bios?

There's often something preventing windows from reading a good memory bandwith with the built in test for many people. However, I'm getting:

sdpc.jpg

With:
2x1gb Geil ULL pc6400 c4
2x2gb Buffalo Firestix heat pc6400 c4

Running at 800mhz 4-4-4-12 2T with in symetric dual channel mode

Somethings not reading or set up right. ( Checked if it runs in dual channel mode ?)

tis pretty poo memory by todays standards...
It's not at all really, pc6400 cas 4 ( with tras latency of 12) kits are often quite easily capable of 1066mhz at 5-5-5-15 or 16 ish.
For S775 anything over running a 1:1 fsb to ram ratio often goes to waste and low timings may ( or may not) provide better overall performance. I'm not exactly sure how it works with i7's though with the built-in memory controllers since I haven't had an I7 before ( nor seen the need to have one for current games).
my pc-8500 1066MHz ram only hits 6.6
Your score is also way too low/read incorrectly.

He has windows 7 which rates it 1-7.9.
You have vista which only rates to 5.9 max.

Not sure why my scores are too much below snowys since we have almost identical systems cept he has more ram and a slightly better spec gtx 260. My cpu btw is 3.2ghz oc.

My mem is Hyper X pc 8500 but underclocked to run 1.1 with cpu. Lowered timings than default mainly 4.4.4.somit.

Davy, that's exactly the point - it doesn't narrow things down properly. It makes it think your graphics is the problem, when your card is more powerful. ie there's almost certainly another bottleneck.

You upgrade your GPU, the bottleneck is still there so the GPU score stays low. That's why it's of no use as a practical thing.

Err actually no.

The gpu score is a direct result of your GPU memory bandwith, Aero tests, video decompression and features ( eg. if a card doesn't have dx9.0c in can only score 4.9 max ) and a 3d benchy in the background. The performance index benchy actually stresses just the gpu for the gpu tests.

The score depends on the graphics bandwidth of video memory, the version of DirectX supported (the score is stuck at 1.0 with a card that is DirectX 9) and management (part) of decompression video. Aero tests are carried out.

For games, the score depends on the framerate, but to exceed 4.9, it will need a card compatible with Pixel Shader 3.0.
