PC power up issue

i just built another computer there wasnt one of those four pin connectors with the power supply so just have the standard one plugged into the motherboard. i dont know if its not enough power but my pc switches on but then after a few seconds cuts out and then restarts.

this then goes in a loop is it a PSU issue or have i installed the CPU wrong.

I might be wrong but though if it was a CPU over heating issue then it would have switched on and stayed off. the motherboard has some lights on it properly to indicate the fault but no lights mentioned in the motherboard manual

4gb OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.4Ghz
Thermaltake ToughPower 750W Power Supply

i hope this of help.

well there is a 4 pin connection or listed as a ATX 12v connection on the top left of the board.

i tryed taking a picture but it wasnt very clear

Do you mean the one I highlighted in this pic? If so then that's the power to the CPU and other compnants. It needs to be plugged in. There should be a lead from the PSU that is labelled CPU.

If it's not then you really need to give some more information mate.

yes i do mean that one since you posted that i connected a 400w power supply up with that connector on and its now booting. The PSU i ordered didnt come with one. So maybe there was enough power there.

What do you think

it looks like it 2 me as well but i couldnt find it with the PSU the only one i could fine had 6 pins and not 4
i will double check incase though

thanks for your help

If the six pin one is labeled CPU then it will fit in that socket. It should only go in one way, make sure you line up the locking tabs on it.

thanks that has actually worked but now when the PC boots if i try and get to it to install an OS i have tried Vista and unbunto and they both get to the setup screen showing the background but no boxes or anything to click on and after about 5 mins the cd stops spinning and it sits there doing nothing.

you can move the mouse still and press the caps lock etc and that still goes on and off. Any ideas to what that might be

Long Time

i lefted it and got the country selection screen etc up and then put in the CD key. it then copied the files accross and had nearly finished extracting them to about 80% the screen has now gone blank and the cd ligh goes off ten comes on then goes off like its reading the disc but its been doing that for hte last 20 mins or so.

so im not sure weather its got stuck or its just taking its time

Hmm, the whole process should be done in under 45 mins from previous experience but I suppose that's dependant on the individual machine. Is the CD your using free of scratches and marks?
