PC Powers Down after 1-5 Minutes

Ok I've given up all hope of trying to sort this out myself so I've decided to post this to see if anyone can help me.

This morning after turning my PC on it started randomly powering down for no reason what so ever. I thought ok, must be a cpu heat issue. Checked the bios and it seems to be fine, running at 37-45 deg.

I did install vista sp1 yesterday, but I don't see how it could be a software issue when it powers down while in the bios.

Secondly I thought that maybe it could be a memory problem, I switched out one of the sticks of ram so it was running just 1GB and it started doing all sorts of weird stuff, blue screens, not booting up properly (doing it with both of the sticks but just one in). Could it possibly be the ram? It boots fine with 2 sticks in but then powers down, but with just one stick it wont boot up properly.

Anyway here are my current PC specs:

Motherboard: Lanparty NF4-Ultra D
Chipset: AMD Dualcore X2 4800+
Memory: 2GB Corsair XMS
Graphics: Geforce 7950 GX2
PSU: Tagan 700watt

Cheers.

Can you not roll back to the System Restore point you quite rightly Set Prior to the SP1 update to see if it is SP1 or hardware ?

I can't even get into vista really it takes too long and the computer just powers down. It can load XP though which I'm dual booting so I really don't think its software.

Try memtest on each stick seperately and in diff slots to see if its ok.

Tests 5 and 7 are the ones you want to run.

Just to clarify when u say power down you mean it switches itself off totally? Have you checked the shutdown temp settings in bios as they may have changed/been changed somehow and cause the mb to "think its overheating?

Also when you boot into xp how long before it turns off? Same time?

Do you have a spare psu that you could try?

Ok think I figured out the problem, fault stick of ram. Tested each stick individually and seems to be working on this one fine. Does Corshair have a lifetime guarentee? Thanks for the help anyway guys.

Yeah looks like I'll have to return both sticks. Unfortunately seems like this hasn't solved the problem. PC doesn't turn off randomly but I am getting blue screens about an uncorrectable hardware error, I have no idea what it could be now, did a mem test on the good stick of ram and it came up with no errors.

Seen it before where a damaged stick of ram has trashed an operating system :(

Only way to be sure is to do a format and clean install.

How long did you leave memtest running for on good stick? Sometimes needs to be run overnight for errors to show.

well have now run memtest on both sticks successfully in my house mates pc, going to try another psu to see if thats it, if not will format / clean install.

right, tried all the hardware from my housemates pc and decided that it was probably a CPU issue as his CPU in my motherboard seemed to work with no problems. I ordered an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4GHz) Socket 939 1MB L2 Cache OEM Processor the other day just as a quick fix issue so I can use my computer, fixed it in this morning and low and behold no image or anything is being displayed on the monitor... PC turns on ok, just nothing is being displayed at all. I am right in thinking that this CPU should work in a LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D? Anyone got any ideas?
