PC powers up by itself!

I have an issue where my PC has switched itself on 4 times in the last week and I don't know why or how it's doing it. I always shutdown the PC when i'm done and never use sleep mode. It also uses a USB wifi adapter so the onboard "wake on lan" function shouldn't be causing it (which is disabled in the bios anyway). I'm running Windows 8.1 and the motherboard is the Asrock Z97 Extreme4.

Anyone have any ideas what's causing this? Cheers

What case do you have? It may well be a faulty switch or something - what you could try is taking the power switch header out from the motherboard and playing around with it. It will be a pain to turn it on (if your mobo has a button then great, if not shorting the two pins with a screwdriver will do). Also depends on whether this idea is practical too

Is wake on USB/wake on keyboard and mouse selected in the BIOS either?

I have the Raijintek Agos case and the PC has been fine ever since I built it around 5 months ago. It switches on and off fine using the case button. Coincidentally I did update the boards BIOS to the latest version (1.50) just over a week ago. All the "wake on" options are disabled in the BIOS too.

Hi
I'm new here ;)

This has happened to me a couple of times as well, thought I was going mad:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2799178

Have a read of that.

Thanks for the link :). Do you know if this only applies when the PC is in a sleep/hibernation state? I fully shutdown my PC when i'm finished with it, but leave the wall socket switched on.

When mine was doing it, it was after I had finished for the evening and selected Shut Down. When I got up in the morning and went past my office my PC was on.

Windows 8 doesn't really shut down anyway on a shut down, http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/wi...ws-8-hybrid-shutdown-fast-boot-feature-works/

It sounds bizarre, the first few times it did it, I thought I had hibernated and the cat walked over the keyboard or something lol..

Wifi does have an equivalent to WOL called WoWLAN

Go into device manager.
Find your adapter and select properties, then in the power management tab, make sure there are no options checked to wake from magic packets.
Especially "wake on magic packets from power off state"

But as above check out the event viewer, That will tell you what turned on your PC
