I had been having problems for a while, some times when I was playing pretty intensive games the pc would lock up and the screen would usually turn into vectors shooting about the screen.
This didn't happen too often just every couple weeks usually.
Since moving flat though I've had problems with my RAM and removing the faulty stick seemed to make it work ok for a while.
Now it won't even post to the screen though. All the fans spin though and there are no abnormal beeping noises.

My PC is about 3years old now and I was looking to upgrade pretty soon. Should I try salvage some of the components or just go for a new build?

Hi and welcome

Its upto you, if you want to try n troubleshoot current PC we can, even if you were going to bin it anyway getting it to stage where you know whats broke/working could allow you to seel on those parts that still work

To figure if its upgradable first off, what sort of budget do you have in mind? And what are your system specs? These will also be needed for troubleshooting

First stage in troubleshooting is to perform a clrCMOS, shouldnt need to if nothings changed but its best place to start
Take battery out mobo and leave for 10 mins then replace and try booting, see how that goes

If that doesnt work then best thing to do is to remove all your components from mobo, absolutely everything, so the only thing you have left is mobo and PSU, then try powering this on, you should then get a series of error beeps indicating no CPU present (check your mobo manual or manufacturers website for beep sequences)

If you do, good, put CPU in and try again, you should then get error sequence for no RAM, again if you do continue adding components til you get no beeps/error messages GPU next then HDD and finally optical/peripherals

If at any stage you get no beeps and no POST the last component added is prob the culprit, so on inital attempt it could be PSU or mobo, without borrowing a PSU off a mate or something its hard to tell which

you could get a very nice complete new system for that, as before though whats current system spec? In case any of it is salvagable for new build/upgrade route
Have a read of the thread in my sig for ideas of what you could get for your money, think theres a coupla builds around the 700 mark

Fully unplugged everything and gradually put in components.
2 sticks of RAM were faulty.
Borrowed a friends graphics card and managed to get in to OS no problem.

Should I put the cash in to buying more RAM and a GFX? Or is it just worth buying a whole new rig?
