PC randomly shutsdown

Hey Guys,

I am looking for some assistance/help with a pc issue that I have been having for the past month or so. When playing some games my pc randomly decides to shutdown completely. What I mean is that I can be in game, and then out of nowhere my monitor goes black and the pc shutsdown, sometimes the power button will remain on and the lights/fans will power back up, however after a few seconds it shutsdown completely.

Now this does not happen everyday, as sometimes I can have no issues for a few days until it happens again. It has mostly occurred when playing dungeon defenders, and has recently shutdown a few times whilst playing Guild Wars 2.

I only purchased this pc from overclockers back in March 2012, so its a pretty new system. As I am new to pc gaming and pcs in general, I am unsure as to what could be causing this issue, and thought I would ask you guys for some help and advice.

If you guys can help it would be greatly appreciated. :D

Computer Specs:

Cooler: OcUK H2 Flo Extreme CPU Cooler

Drivers up to date?

Unstable overclock? Tried running at stock? Done any stress testing?

Cooler seated properly? Got TIM? What are your temps like? What are your temps when the system turns off by itself?

Everything else on motherboard seated properly? Fans right way round?

This ^.... do you also get any error messages after the crash? sudden crahes might point to overheating. Check to see if the heatsink/cooling is connected and enough paste is on the cpu. Make sure the base unit is not dusty as well.

Cleaned my system from any excess dust, fans are all working fine. Updated to most recent beta drive for graphics card, this was advised when I started to playing Guild wars 2.

Not sure how to check if its in regards to unstable overclock, but I am currently running a Prime 95 stress test. Not sure if this is what I should be running to check for errors that could relate to my pc shutting down, and I will leave this to run for a few hours (been going for an hour so far).

I have run MSI afterburner, to monitor my gpu temp. Idle temp is 38 degrees and when playing games can go up to 70. Not checked temp of my cpu, need to find something to monitor this? any recommendations?

The system was prebuilt for me, as I have no knowledge about computers so I can only assume that everything is connected/seated correctly and to be honest I wouldn't know what to check for if they were not.

I don't get any error message when computer shutsdown, or when I turn it back on.

What should I be looking for when looking through the event viewer, should it just be kernel power events that show as errors/warnings? If so I can not see any, only Kernel Processor Power event id 26, prior to these I see Kernel Power event ID 109, then Kernel general 13 & 12, unsure as to what these mean but they do not show as errors or warnings.

So been running Prime 95 for just over 5 hours, and just downloaded the CoreTemp as advised to measure temps. Let it run for a bit and readings whilst prime is running are:

Core #0 min 61, max 74 all at 100% load
core #1 min 65, max 81
core #2 min 68, max 83
core #3 min 62, max 76

Idle temps:

core #0 min 34, max38
core #1 min 31, max 43
core #2 min 35, max 40
core #3 min 31, max 36

If its a case of the cpu, clean off existing thermal paste, re-add thermal paste (Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal paste around £3-4) and reseat the heatsink. If that doesnt fix the problem it probably is the power supply. You might have to ask a computer savvy friend to check how to do this.

So whilst playing Guild wars 2 I used CoreTemp to monitor the temps, and it ranged from 35 degrees min to 60 degrees max, I managed to play for several hours yesterday and the day before without my computer shutting down.

However today, I was only in the game for around 30 mins, monitor showing the same temps..and then my computer shut down.

The temps do not seem that high, therefore is it most likely the psu? Should I go ahead and purchase a new one?

ok so looks like I have a further problem, pc shutdown again and this time I got an error message stating "usb device over current detected", and system shutsdown after 15 seconds. I have no idea what is going on, and after only having the pc for 5 months there seems to be too much going wrong with it :S

Sounds like the issue I had recently that required new PSU install

Just to confirm when you say PC shuts down while gaming do you mean sudden power cutout and not going through the shutdown sequence?
