PC refuses to sync at 1Gbps??

Can you hard-configure the ports on the switch? auto-negotiation is flakey at best and I always hard code the settings where possible.

Few switches I've dealt with support that above 100mbit. Even very expensive Extreme networks enterprise gear e.g X450a-48 you can't force 1000 you only have the option to force 10 or 100 1000 has to be suto negotiated. I had an issue slightly similar to the OPs and i did try forcing 1000meg on the switch but it wasn't supported.

Just as an update I decided to remove the D-Link and try the onboard PCIe gigabit NIC. This, more often than not, syncs at 1Gbps, however not every reboot.

Frickin weird PC I have....PS3 and Acer Revo 3600 both sync at 1Gbps every time without fail.

You say the intel isn't always training to 1Gbps, have you tried a different switch port? It could be a problem with the switch.

Oh and CAT5e is good for 10Gbps upto 40m. 1Gbps upto 100m.

Intel only arrived today so have to try when I get home. Also going to remove ESS at the same time....it's amusing they send you an extra uninstaller when you ask support as the standard uninstaller won't get rid of everything!

We'll see what happens this evening :)

As already said earlier, nothing wrong with the switch, all ports work fine, cable is fine...it appears to be Windows being crap with drivers so hopefully Intel's will be better!

Note to self.....just buy a frickin Intel NIC in the first place.

Problem solved, Intel NIC has no problem syncing at 1Gbps at all!
