PC restarting itself. Sometimes bluescreens and no display on start up.

Is there much difference between gold and platinum? I was thinking £80 max but can go up a tenner. Was thinking of going modular so I don't have to mess around with all the cables.

May also go for the £60 super flower. Is 550w enough? Even if I upgrade, I won't be buying the best and most expensive components but probably the next level like a 1070 instead of a 1080.

Personally I would always go for the Platinum or Titainium rated PSU's - having much higher quality components and better voltage regulation.

Don't forget that the PSU supplies ALL your components juice so you would want to make sure that juice is of sufficient quality to protect them.

Looking at the hassle you've just been through - a higher quality PSU gives you a better chance of avoiding such situations in the future.

But at the end of the day, you pays your money and takes your choice :D

I bought the super flower 550w that Marco recommended.

I installed and turned it on but the problem from before occurred and I couldn't get a signal. I've changed the graphics card to an old one that I found in an old computer and now it won't turn on at all. So I think the whole thing has just died.

It looks like a new pc is in order now.

Not sure what's happening!

Ended up taking everything out of the case and giving it a good clean.

Wired everything back up outside the case and sometimes it would start up and then instanly turn off and then back on again. Then it randomly started up fine but when I turned it off and turned it back on it wouldn't start up at all. I have it back in the case now but at times it won't start at all and I will have to turn the power supply off and wait for all the LEDS to go off, turn the power supply back on and then it will come on.

Terrible explanation I know.

it must be very annoying now for you, end of day its your decision where you wanna turn next, i.e new pc, try a new mobo, etc at least you have a new psu if you did go pc route

Needing to fully "power cycle" PSU might hint protections getting triggered by some short.
Though still PSU won't even try to start unless motherboard grounds PS-ON wire of PSU when you push button of the case.
So that doesn't exclude motherboard failure as cause.

Efficiency doesn't automatically mean all components are good.
It affects only semiconductors, which need to be at some "minimum" level to not waste power.
Capacitors don't have really anything to do with efficiency.
And that Super Flower Platinum King uses third tier C(r)apXon capacitors...
Of course putting Chemicon to 5Vsb so that it keeps starting even when other secondary caps are starting to fail.
SuperFlower is likely counting on people looking more watts than in quality PSUs to give that warranty.
