Just recently my PC seems to be running like a broken poofter. I click on something, sometimes nothing happens & I have to click again & sometimes again. The Internet seems a little laggy yet when I try an online speed check my broadband speed seems fine. After boot up things are very slow to warm up & get going. It's working fine I'm sure but the whole experience seems just a little 'sticky' of late. I've tried the usual things - defrag HD, virus/trojan scans etc. There doesn't seem to be any major problems that I can see. Perfmon shows thnigs quite settled although the page file does seem to spike horribly whenever I do anything. Not sure if this is normal or not. I'm just wondering what else to try.

Cheers for the replies. I was thinking a complete re-install might be on the cards.

I'm possibly looking at Windows 7 + a new gfx card so I might play around with some of the things on links posted above beforehand.

Tried all those. I don't really know what to make of what I'm seing though so they are of limited use. Might just do a clean install of XP. By the time I've figured things out I could have just formatted my HD & re-installed everything anyway. Sometimes it's best to use a sledge hammer to crack a nut ;)

I always revert to a fresh install, I do one a few times a year, may seem a lot but I use my pc so much that i notice slight draws and lags etc and know its that time :).

The first thought that came [oh dear] into my head after reading the thread title was "lay off the porn".

A reinstall usually solved my XP woes as sometimes no matter what you do, you can't get that spark back. Shiny new install and hooray! It is always worth being very strict on what you install, and ask yourself "do I really want this to start with Windows and do I want it to run all the time in the background?".

Whenever possible I prevent things loading with Windows and I disable services until I need it. Especially from the likes of iTunes and Google!

For me every time I install itunes I notice my comp starts to behave a bit different but yeh im always cautions when installing after a fresh reinstall.

Good tip. The only time I've had any real problems with my PC has been after a good old porn session  But this problem is weird. It's not like anything is seriously wrong. Not even noticeably wrong. It's just that you click on something & it hangs. So you click again & it's sweet. Weird problem.

I assume you only have one hard drive, if so this is irrelivant.

Sometimes my second hdd goes to sleep then it takes a few seconds to spin up again.

I have a second drive used for back-up but I've not had a problem with this before.

The main drive was actually a little fragmented (16%) but unfortuantely a defrag had no effect on this annoying issue.

I reinstall windows after it's given up on me. Occasionally I'm organised enough to have an image of a clean install ready and waiting.

It's cheating, but it's so much quicker and easier that I don't really care. Eventually my ignorance of fixing XP may come back to haunt me, but it'll be obsolete soon and then all will be well.
