Which card would go the best with that setup?
2x 1GB NVIDIA GeForce with CUDA GTX280 - SLi Configuration - PhysX enabled
or
2x 2GB ATi Radeon HD4870 X2 Graphics Card - (CrossFire for Ultimate Gaming)

Intel® Core™ i7 940 Quad Core Processor (2.93GHz,8MB Cache,4.8GT/s)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit - English
CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000 Professional Silent Chassis with 1000W PSU
ASUS P6T Deluxe Mainboard - Intel Core™ i7 - ATX - Dual Mode SLI & CrossfireX
6GB 1333MHz Triple Channel DDR3 SDRAM - ( 3x2GB )
1TB (1x 1000GB) Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive with 32MB Buffer

I think the 4870x2 out perform the GTX280, but I might be wrong on that one as I often lose track of what graphics cards do what!

Its pretty confusing to choose because some people say the 4870 and some say the 280 but I dont really know which. I have heard bad things about the 4870 like the fan breaks on it and Im just confused :) I just want my new pc setup to play crysis in very high graphics :) and play future games in 2009 in good fps

Well i have a GTX 260 and it plays crysis in very high (I think, havent played in a while) Wish the prices of the 280 where what they are now 3 months ago when I bought my 260.

If it was me Id go with the 280 purely on bang for buck!

I'd go for the 2 x 280 I think, but you'd need to be a serious gamer to find it necessary to SLi two 280s. I have just one and don't feel the need for another yet. If you haven't already purchased that spec I would think again about getting the 940... a clocked 920 is going to be just as good.

the 2 x 4820x2 will outperform the 2x 280gtx by miles! especially if you play with 32AA and on a 1080p screen (or more).

But the 280gtx is 200 less.

for the same price you could do 3 x 280gtx which would beat 2x4870x2

(based on £200 for 280gtx on ocuk and 4870x2 at £300)

Actually no they wouldnt because although the X58 boards can take 3 gfx cards, when you use all 3 slots theyre running at x16 x8 x8, by only using 2 slots you have full x16 x16, so you dont really see any improvement in adding the 3rd card, they just put that in for ppl with more money than sense

Wrong!

look at benchies!

you would see an improvement on a 30" screen by a 5fps atleast. but for a 24" screen you probally don't even need SLI of X-fore. one 4870x2 would be fine :)

Benchmarks mean sweet FA Im afraid, according to all the tech reports you see no improvement in real world applications, yes you may score a slightly higher bench but that dont mean anything

You notice most difference getting a single better card, eg for now a 295 or 4870x2, you notice less difference the more cards you add, you will still notice quite a big difference with 2 cards in SLI/crossfire, its when you look to add a 3rd the difference becomes negligible

So you think its pointless in getting the 2 cards? just get 1? 280 or 4870 if so what would you choose?
