I purchased a pc from a guy on Facebook market place.

specs:
I5 4670k
980
750rm power supply
16gb ram
2ttb hdd
250gb ssd.

it’s worked in front of me when testing it and I checked it all over. Got it home and my sister played a few games on it on Monday. We go to turn it on today. The fans spin up for around 15-25 seconds. The blue power led comes on but then it turns off after that amount of time and starts this process endlessly. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.

the guy is refunding us so going to build one new instead. The 500-900 is a big gap because it’s just for my sister who plays roblox / minecraft etc so cheaper the better but if it’s a worth upgrade for the price then please just say. Thanks for any help

How far of a boot does it get, what do you see on screen? Can you see the BIOS screen and get into BIOS? Or as far as the Windows loading logo, or the desktop before it shuts down or?

Could be worth trying the simple stuff first - check all power cables and other connectors are securely in. Might have come loose in transit back to your place.

Also try remove the CMOS battery on the mobo, take it out for 1-2 mins, then re-seat it and try boot again.

Sorry. So I power it on. The fans spin. Gpu light comes on (wind force) not the mobo gpu debug.

then after that it lasts around 20 seconds then turns off. Then back on and repeats. Doesn’t display a picture so i don’t if it’s even a boot loop. More of a loop as this stage haha.

Does the mobo have any debug lights on it? (or at the rear on the IO plate) Might help give a clue if any hardware faults possibly.

If not just try the above things I said first and let us know (all cables & mobo battery)

Cmos battery out atm. Reseated ram/ checks all connections/ reseated cpu. Tried booting with gpu out and on board graphics no luck

Ok, well pop CMOS battery back in at least then.

Could be faulty mobo, CPU or power supply maybe. Wonder if that's why he sold it on or just sheer coincidence.

Have you got another PSU you could hook up and try boot?

Spoke to the guy. He’s a nice guy. He’s refunding us. Going to build one. £900 is our budget. What would you recommend?

Crikey, nice bloke. That's a jump :p Is this the rig for your sister at 1080p? Roblox and things if I recall? Lol

Yeah haha. I know it’s a jump. We just think build it good now and we won’t have to upgrade it for years. Tried the cheap route. But honestly mate if you think we could get something decent for £500-£700 then I’m not going to argue haha.

How about

Edit: Prob best swap SSD for the M.2 version in this case, keep cables tidy. On mobile now so difficult to edit basket lol https://www.overclockers.co.uk/wd-b...-solid-state-drive-wds100t2b0b-hd-54n-wd.html

Could also get semi/modular case for few quid more if your bothered for less cables. Just tried to keep costs down.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £728.85 (includes shipping: £0.00)

For those sorts of games £900 is overkill.

If you wanted to future proof it a bit more you could get a dedicated GPU in the form a a RX580 (which again is way over the for games like Roblox and Minecraft)

The 980 works in the rig the bloke refunded me for so he wants £60 for the 980. I’ve stress tested it and it seems fine. Is that a good price for a 980? Just thinking that way I can get her the stuff above and have a okay dedicated gpu?

Sorry I meant to quote you above but idk how to multi quote. I’ve replied above was meant for both of you.

So I’ve got a 980 and a 250gb ssd 860 evo.

what cpu would you recommend or will all modern stuff be bottlenecked by such an ancient gpu? She only plays roblox / minecraft. Uses discord and normal stuff like YouTube/homework.

I would go for this and snag the GTX 980 to go with it.

would be a decent little rig for under 450 quid or under 400 if you drop the SSD and just use the evo.

Thanks for the spec. When are we talking about the gpu starting to bottleneck. I just mean a lot of room in budget so would it future proof more a better cpu and drop in a better gpu down the line?

The GPU should be able to manage 1080P 60hz even in newer games and It certainly won't bottleneck minecraft or roblox.

You could always grab a more powerful GPU/CPU in the future if the need arises.

I suggested the 3600 for longevity of the system personally. If you've got a 980 and SSD then that'll tide her over nicely, not sure if 250GB will be enough though? Might just do but not gonna last long I expect.

@jamster0212 however I do think that PSU Joxeon suggested is potentially too weak and under-spec'd... The 980 wasn't that power efficient, Nvidia recommended 500w with 38 amps on 12v rail. That PSU is only 450w with 36 amps on 12v rail. So even if it did just about run, it likely be border line, and wouldn't take anything better if you upgraded GPU again later. You also don't want to be running PSUs on the brink either as they won't last as long, they like some head room.

I'd at least go up to the CV550 model here.
