Pc spec for wife’s oled gaming

nah mate, the thermalrights are better value. 5 fans for £15
i use these fans too, so speaking from experience too
forgot about those so yeah also those as the cheap option
though no idea about long term reliability
but thermalright is certainly a tough company
to beat for value and performance

Thanks. Maybe a mistake for the refresh rate, but it does look very nice ingame which is why she wanted it. I get 240fps at max settings in WoW, but it is an older game - one of the reasons I wasn't sure whether a different graphics card would be just as good for her such as an AMD or 5070 etc.

I can give you some actual performance experience with the 5080 (paired to a 9800x3d) in 4k. Keep in mind that my 5080 is overclocked to 3270mhz core 18000mhz memory and my 9800x3d has PBO and varies between 5450 and 5600 mhz.

World of Warcraft - averaging 180 fps on max with full AA and no RT, real heavy fights drop to 60 fps, which is a huge improvement for me and I attribute it to the x3d CPU (used to drop down to 20 fps sometimes on my old build).

Budget honestly is 'whatever will work best for her without overpaying for no reason'.
If you're buying a 5080 (or even a 5070, to be honest) you might as well just get the 7800X3D or 9800X3D.

They are expensive, but MMOs tend to like these CPUs and you're already forking out on the GPU, so there's not much point saving the money if you can afford to buy one.

If you did want to keep costs down, a £130 motherboard like Gigabyte's B650 Eagle is going to be near indistinguishable from a say.. £200 B850 board, but I'd just get PCI-E 5.0 to avoid any possible headaches in the future with upgrades.

If you really like the shinies, have a look at Antec's C5 ARGB, it includes 7x 120mm ARGB fans which makes it decent value. The C8 Curve looks better, but doesn't have any fans. Fishbowl cases are not to my taste, hence Lian Li's 216.

Note that if you get a case with a lot of included RGB/ARGB fans and then fit a 360mm AIO for aesthetics, it can cause cabling problems (if you have to strip out what is already done from the factory) and something I'd personally want to avoid messing with.

its a lovely monitor thought about getting one
but it sets a very high bar to max it out
that probably a 5090 would be required to have a chance
to be honest any oled looks great
i settled for 1440p ultra widescreen oled at 175hz
which doesnt need the 5080,5090 to run it at max

so your monitor choice kind of puts you
in an awkward position
in an ideal world a 5090
again the price is way too high from what it should be
youre really looking at whether the price difference between
9070xt and 5080 is acceptable to you
hard to recommend anything but those 2 cards for you

Thanks, the aforementioned lack of current hardware knowledge kicking in. So really if it’s anything other than classic WoW we wouldn’t be getting anywhere near consistent performance at 4k. Will have to see how things perform at a lower resolution. Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks really helpful.

theres also the graphics drivers lately
from nvidia have caused issues
and of course the ongoing 12hpwr connector saga
to consider as well
and nvidias missing ROPS on some cards

Though personally if OP did really have no budget, then 4k 240Hz = 5090
The rest of the current line up, nvidia and AMD aren't great at their current prices
wait a minute... @Mcnumpty2323 gets a thank you and i don't! :o

My take home from all this is that it was a stupid question and I didn’t quite get how hard it was to use the monitor to its fullest at the moment - unless I stick to a 20 year old version of a game.

unfortunately, yes.
for pc gaming, the sweetspot for price-performance is 1440p high-refresh rate gaming. but yes, you can still turn the settings down for 4k gaming too
though personally, i'd rather have high quality 1440p frames than 4k polygons lol

AMD communicated that one of their goals for the 9070 / 9070 XT was to bring 4K gaming to the "mainstream" and especially with FSR4 they're capable of that, but for modern AAA games at max settings we're still not at a point that 4K is easily obtainable, even for Halo cards llke the 4090/5090.
