PC sudden shut down while gaming

I was playing WoW and my PC just shut down completely (no warnings, no BSoD, no restart).

Turning the power back on didn't turn the PC on, neither the motherboard switch.

I then turned the PSU switch off, wait 10 seconds to make sure the motherboard's lights are off before I turn the PSU on, and then turn the PC back on via the motherboard switch. It worked.

This has happened 3 times now while I've been playing WoW so I'm convinced there is something rotten in my PC.

I ran a few CPU burn tests (Prime and IntelBurnTest), temperatures went up to 74°C maximum with no shut downs. Waited for a while and played WoW and again, after 7-8 minutes of playing WoW the PC shuts down again. CPU temperature at the time of shut down read 43°C so I'm pretty sure this is not a CPU temperature/fan/heatsink problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Specs:
CPU: Intel 4th Generation Core i7 (4770K) running at stock settings
CPU cooler: CORSAIR Water Cooling Hydro Series H100i CPU COOLER
PSU: Antec HCG 900-GB HIGH CURRENT GAMER - 900WATTS PSU 80 PLUS BRONZE

Rig is 5 years old, arguable haven't re-applied thermal paste since I've owned this PC but then again if you read above it doesn't seem like a heat problem per se.

I too think a PSU issue. I had a very similar situation with shutdowns during games, PC not switching back on until the PSU was switched off or disconnect power cable for a while. After putting in a new PSU it all worked fine since.

So....we have another person here with a psu problem....
Come on now.... this can't be a coincidence now...

Something is going on....

?????

Quick google suggests that PSU is 6 or 7 years old. If anything, the thing that's going on is that PSUs go wrong, specially cheap and or old ones.

Burn in test will not put same load on PSU as WoW will do

Run something like Haven or 3D Mark and see if shuts down

Yes this is a tech forum and people come to talk about things which are working or not working.

CPU's are almost indestructible in normal use so we rarely see anything about those or if we do it's a high chance someones physically damaged it.

Meanwhile GPUs, PSUs, HDDs all have moving parts and inevitably die from the effects of heat and time spent in use. So we get constant threads about those dying or being completely dead.

I did my fair share of reading and troubleshooting before I posted the thread. I'd had this trouble before but last time it was the CPU running hot and shutting down. I was quite sure it was the CPU in fact but I checked the CPU temperatures many times and it wasn't the problem. Hence the thread.

Hope someone else will find the solution beneficial.
