I have my PC currently connected to my amp using the following connections:

Video: DVI to HDMI
Audio: Coaxial from soundcard

I am going to upgrade my GPU from my 8800GTX to one of the latest ATI or Nvidia cards. Will I be able to use HDMI audio for everything? (music, games, video, iplayer, etc). Or will I still need to use the soundcard?

You can use HDMI to do everything. That's what I do with my Mac. :)

That's cool, I can reduce my many number of cables by one :). So is there any point in keeping the soundcard? It's a Creative X-Fi IIRC. Or do PC games still require a dedicated soundcard for all the sound effects?

I'm just using my ati 5850 to my amp with hdmi now, kind of feel like my Xonar is wasted.

Probably worth keeping the soundcard just in case you need it at some point.

I have a question on the subject too, will my ati card automatically output bitstream or will I need to set it? I'd rather let my amp sort it.
