PC to Linux device with a network cable - how?

Point it at 10.0.0.97? If you stick 10.0.0.97:80 into your browser, you're presumably supposed to get something...

If you just want to communicate from the laptop to the linux box set like this....

Dreambox
IP: 192.168.0.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Type: LAN
Nameserver: {Leave Blank}
Gateway: {Leave Blank}

Laptop
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: {Leave Blank}
Preferred DNS: {Leave Blank}
Secondary DNS: {Leave Blank}

Remember, you won't be able to get access to the Internet via the settings above as there is no DNS/Gateway attached settings above.

I think you may need to explain alittle bit more exactly how you want things to be set up.

Bare in mind you don't use a crossover cable, you would need a straight through ethernet cable unless the ethernet ports are auto sence to detect if a crossover cable has been placed or a straight through.

Look at the connectors at the end of the cable. Do the wire colours go in the same order on both connectors, or are they different?

They are different

UPDATE -

I've been to my mates this morning and checked his system out which was working perfectly.
I then put my box on and I can't communicate :(

My linux box is broken:(

Thanks for all your efforts and I have learnt loads of stuff so it hasn't been wasted on me.

Are you using a Straight (patch) or Crossover cable to connect the two devices? as you will most likely need a crossover cable for it to work.
