PC Tower Stand

My PC tower is currently on my desk, but I am looking at options for freeing up space. I know you should not put a tower on the carpet, but is it feasible to have it on a raised stand? I have seen a few options online, but am unsure whether it is a good idea, and if so which direction to go in.

Presumably the two issues are cooling and dust? I would say my PC already runs warmer than I would like, so if having it 6in off the carpet is going to affect that, then I wouldn't bother.

I've had older pc's in the past on the floor on carpet and on laminate flooring.... they had no bottom (I'd never put this type of case on a carpet) or top venting though. Honestly it just resulted in more frequent dust cleaning in my experience....

There are ways to mount it to the underside of a table and you've also got the pc trolleys which raise the pc up off the ground.

You'll be fine with a raised stand, if you think about it, a desk is just a raised stand just taller....

i have my tower on the floor. I purchased a "shelf" piece from Homebase for £7 and PC fits just right on it. Plus as it slides on the carpet, if I ever want to take it out for whatever reason, I dont need to lift it up and out, just slide the panel out from under the desk and then you have easy access to the whole tower.

Plus temps are slightly better if anything, as heat rises, and the floor is cooler than the top of the room if you think about it?

dust and restricted airflow
if your carpet has any sort of pile on it
i used a floating shelf i had laying around
and put a decent set of castors on it
though nowadays its sitting on that on top of a 18 inch high chest
as my backs so bad now i cant get down to floor level
when i want to work on the pc :(

I think the airflow will be pretty much the same, I am just concerned about the temps. Would the material you have it on make a difference? Would some sort of tile/slate be cooler than wood?

Not really, you've got a gap between the bottom of the case and the surface anyways (assuming it's the lian li in sig), which is needed for the psu fan (keep this clean from dust etc - that corsair has no fan mode iirc).

Apart from the psu with bottom intake, the rest of the air should be going 'front to back/top' so the pc itself should be fine, you might get some heat build up under the desk though so it wouldn't hurt if you can pull your desk forward a little to help the heat escape at the rear.

As above.

I went to my local tile shop and found a tile that had virtually identical dimensions to the case. Had I not found this I would have used wood - as it's all about the airflow. But, certainly better than sitting directly on carpet.

This I exactly what I did, but I removed the keyboard tray/drawer from the desk as kept banging my knees on it and I dont use it any way.
Turns out its the perfect size to put a pc case on!

Gumtree/freecyle office drawers, the kind that slide under the desk (not to use that way, as a side unit instead), plenty of room, some storage, come on wheels(pretty handy) and cheap/free if you're willing.
