(not sure if i can post this here so sorry if i cant and delete it)

I'm working on a computer for somebody and it turns it self off (No errors etc). The pc can be on for 5mins or 5 hours before it turns off. I can be playing games, working on a spreadsheet or it can be just sat there idle when it happens. I have run multiple stress tests on the CPU, RAM, GPU, PSU etc and nothing ever shows up as wrong. It's as if somebody has just pulled the plug on a perfectly good pc (There are no slow downs before the crash etc)
Its currently running windows 10 (2 week old fresh install), i5 6700k (No overclock), 16gb of ram (DD4), 2070 Super GPU. 850W PSU, 2 hard drives (one ssd for o/s and one HHD)

(Only problems i can find)
The CPU (i5 6700k) reaches 48c under load... Which seems very low?
However, after running a three hour stress test it didn't crash and showed 0 Errors.

When checking events logs after a crash it simply says that
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

any idea? I don't really have any hardware from that generation to swap in and out. I do have a PSU but it's currently being used in a different system and it would be a ******* to get out.

ANy ideas?!

It does, but an i5-6600K (there's no i5-6700K) doesn't have very high power consumption so a decent cooler could achieve that.

When you're coming to a system that you don't know the history of that's a real pain! I don't really see what you can do, other than remove stuff.

You could take the graphics card out and use the onboard instead.

What brand is it?

Did it do this before the install?

I know it sounds like I'm just pulling a solution out of thin air, but it really sounds like a PSU issue, but try starting with the easy stuff first, RAM, GPU etc. and then hopefully you can get the issue before having to swap the PSU

My money would be on PSU also. It doesn't sound like or exhibit the symptoms of a crash, more a sudden loss of power.

The standoffs is a good shout. Had that happen before. It means you'll have to dismantle the whole thing, but at least you can start from scratch, and hopefully isolate the issue along the way. Just a tip, don't install the motherboard back into the case whilst you are testing. Put it onto an anti static mat, then add things individually. Good luck.
Edit: I also agree the PSU is the likely culprit. What model is it?

Why do I have this awful feeling that the PSU is some no name Chinese unit from 1996?

Lol one of those rectangular grey ones right? I'd be paranoid asf if my PC was shutting down randomly. I hope he gets it sorted (lol?)

Sorry for late reply. Im a carerer and its been a bit of a crap week :(

Same here! Took me days to work out that the standoff was missing and was buggering up the Mobo lol Ive checked and all are there. Ty though.

Its XFX which wasn't a 'bad' brand i seem to remember but it wasn't top of the range. I had one for 8 years before it popped until my new one (Corsair)

I am leaning towards PSU as well. I'm going to buy one from a certain rain forest.. and see if it is. IF it stays on.. ill keep it. If not ill return it.

thanks for everybody who helped :) fingers crossed!!

Sorry to hear it's been a bad week for you
Hope you manage to sort out the PC without too much issue

I have a Corsair VX 550 that still works. Bought it eons ago. Corsair is a reliable brand. I've had XFX cards crap out on me a few times. I'll send you the Corsair PSU for free if you pay postage. (Not sure on the rules here)

Thank you so much thats a really lovely offer. However, my friend purchased a PSU and im currently trying running some tests (Tests as in just leaving it on for 48hours to see if it shuts down lol). Thank you though once again!!! :)

Is this a new system, or a system that was previously working, but now has issues?
The other possibility (but a rare one) could be faulty mains wiring or dodgy mains socket. If you still have issues with the new PSU, try plugging the system into a socket on a different ring main in the house.

Could be some case issues purhaps. 2 things come to mind. The power button wiring/button and USB sockets.

Not sure how to test this but try not to use case io and see what happens.

Cpu temp question. I would benchmark it and compare score to see if it is underperforming.

That is actually a really good idea! The plug it's plugged into was replaced somewhat recently. The issue seems to have been cured by a new psu (Hopfully) BUT if it goes again i think i'll try it on a new socket/loop. Thanks for that!
