Hi,

Would anyone be able to offer me some advice please ?

Currently I have :-

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3400+
MB - Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro
RAM - 1GB Corsair DDR (3200)
GRAPHICS - XFX GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB
HARD DISKS - 2x Maxtor DiamondMax SATA 7,200rpm (160GB)
DVD Driver - Pionner DVR-111
OS - Windows XP Pro (SP2)

My main reason for upgrading is that I want an HD compatible Graphics Card (as I have my PC hooked up to my 37" HDTV) and realise that I will probably have to go to a PCI-Express compatible Motherboard

I am completely open to any suggestions on what commponents I should upgrade or not (New CPU etc etc)

Also would Vista be worth considering ?

My budget is between £300-£400

Thanks for Reading :D :D

another gig of RAM and a dual core CPU might be a good a start if you want to improve the playback of HD content.

I wouldn't say your PC is crap! Thats good compared with the average standard of PC in the UK *DELLS cough*

Anyway, this is what I got, slightly over budget but you get a 8800GTS :D !

You would be looking at massive overclocks with that spec, assuming you are doing that of course.

& welcome to the forums!

I'd personally go for a CPU with more cache - so go for a Conroe rather than an Allendale, or the newer models maybe (6320 etc).

I'm not an expert though, and don't overclock - so maybe better to listen to the overclokers amongst the members if you wish to tread that path...

I have a 500w at the moment....

But its broken, I have to wait approx 15 Mins for my PC to come on I after I press the switch.

Thought I would replace it at the same time as I do my upgrade

If you want to stay in budget of £400/just above that then you may have to sacrifice the 8800 which I would hate to do, they are so much better than anything cheaper by a long shot.

What is the PSU your currently using?

with your spec u could sell the cpu/mobo/ram/gpu for 150 maybe so that would let you get more stuff

Great idea from paul, You can then afford a nice Corsair 520W PSU or the OCZ 600W which I beleive is on special offer for a tasty price :D

thanks for the brilliant advice...

one final question if you dont mind

would my current ram (1GB Corsair DDR (3200) work ok with the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R or the abit.

The reason I ask is that I could always upgrade the ram in a month or two. or is that a bad idea that would really affect performance
