Hi all... new to the forum and would appreciate some unbiased help!

I have around £500 to spend to upgrade my pc. All I want is a new processor, motherboard, RAM and graphics.

I was gonna go down the Intel route (pd 930) but now looking at other threads I am undecided as AMD are getting rave reviews?!?!

Unless im missing something; Asus boards look the way forward

ATI or Nvidia?

What would you do??

Regards

Hi, welcome to the forums!

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM)
£206.74
Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-088-AS)
£70.44
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 (GE2GB3200BDC) (MY-046-GL) **this week only**
£105.69
PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC) **this week only**
£129.19

Total inc VAT: £512.06

Slightly over budget, but I think it will be worth it given that it's dual core and has a good graphics card. "This week only" prices end tommorow. :)

What PSU, case, HDD, display etc will you be using?

AMD is the way to go with, probably, a single core for price and one of the 'cheap' high end ATI graphics cards on offer at the moment. I would recommend ASUS mobo's and 2Gig Geil memory. However, the PSU is critical and, if you don't have a suitable unit, can absorbe a substantial amount of cash!

Cheers for replying

At the moment i have a 350w power supply in the case, already got over 500gb of hd space on three drives (one external via firewire), and a 19" TFT

Then you MUST allow funds for a new ATX 2.0 PSU!

I like the spec but you may have to drop the CPU to single core to allow cash for a noistaker PSU, this week £52 or better still a Sonata 2 for £70 with a decent PSU built in?
