Currently have;

939 3700+ SD
2x 1gb ddr400
K8-NF9
NEC 2350 DVD-RW/DL
1 x Samsung 80gb Sata
1 x Samesung 250gb IDE
1 x Seagate 200gb IDE
1800xt 3d Connect
480w Hiper
Antec 1080AMG

I use it for light gaming and a lot of encoding (DIVX) and it takes forever doing DIVX Files also I need more storage, also it needs to be a bit quiter as is a wee bit loud.

So new;

CPU, Ram, Motherboard, PSU, HDD (500gb) and Case

Case needs to hold 3/4x 5.25", 2x 3.5 on show and a cooled 5+ 2.5" drives.

Budget of £600 ish.

Incase it matters reinstalling xp on it.

I think this should be suitable and comes in a bit under budget, if you wanted then you could get a bigger case with the savings. :)

Will that motherboard PSU work with my ATI GFX as its not SLI or even NVIDA? Also do i have to buy thermal paste or would the HSF come with it?

Also thanks for the list

The motherboard has a 16x PCI-E slot so will work fine with an X1800XT, you can ignore the SLi part, it is just an added feature if you have an Nvidia card but really matters little.

I can't remember exactly but I think you do need thermal paste also so Arctic Silver 5 would be a good choice. :)

Care to elaborate on your post slightly? You've linked to dual core socket 939 chips, are you suggesting that is the cheapest way to upgrade? :)

Yes. He's got a good system, plenty of RAM, just upgrade to dual core and encoding will be faster than the SC 3700. Just add another couple of HD's, perhaps new cooler for X1800XT.

Right have a look on sites it seems that the C2D e6400 is quicker at encoding DIVX files than the fastest 939 cpu 4400+

5 min encoding 8.39 (939) vs 5.52 (C2D) which is a fair difference so theres only three questions left.

1) Would the AMD make up for it if i tried OCing it or would the C2D still be better? Also how easy is it to OC the C2D.

2) How long will the 775 socket be in use as the 939 only lasted 2 years if that :(

3) Would the tagen PSU be better than that crosair and would either have long enough wires to work in a p180?

1) Overclocking will make up some of the difference but Core2Duos tend to overclock better overall regardless. It is easy to overclock, if you already have basic experience of overclocking it shouldn't be a problem but if not there are plenty of threads about it.

2) I can't say for certain, well not without looking at the Intel roadmap but there are currently quad core CPUs available for socket 775 which suggests to me that it won't be going away just yet.

3) I rate the Corsair a bit higher than the Tagan but either should be a good option. I'm afraid I don't know about the cable length though. :)

How About this then;

Which one?

Given the difference in price between socket 939 and socket 775 is only about £60 for a newer and faster system at stock I'd have to go socket 775. You can also upgrade to quad core on the same motherboard with socket 775 should it become prudent to do so. :)
