Hi

I am looking to buy a new monitor. I am looking at ultra-wide 35" and have a £500 budget which will just about get a lower end one. I am not sure if my current CPU will be enough to run 1440p though as it is quite old (specs below)

i5 2500K 0verclocked to 4.8Ghz

8GB RAM

RTX 2070

I recently bought the GPU and am aware that it is probably bottlenecking my CPU, but as i cannot upgrade all at once i have to do it in stages.

After some research, i could upgrade my CPU to i5 9600K with 16GB RAM for about £500.

My question is, should i buy the monitor or CPU upgrade first? I could upgrade the other in a few months.

My current monitor is pretty old and would see a massive improvement, but only if my CPU will do for now.

Thanks in advance

Your whole gaming experience is through the monitor and a 2500K @ 4.8GHz coupled with a GTX 1070 will play most games very comfortably on high/ultra at 1440p (i speak from past experience).

If you're bumping up from 1080p you'll notice a drop in performance but not enough that should bring down your experience of playing at 1440p on a bigger(?) monitor.

This will also give you time to assess Ryzen 2 release - which will probably give you alternate upgrade options...

What monitor were you considering getting?

you have an RTX 2070.... get a 1440p !!!!!!!!!!!!! worth checking to see if your games support Ultra wide resolutions and Good FOV support

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £469.99 (includes shipping: £0.00)

ideally you'd want an i7 4 corre 8 threads as this is now standard for gaming . even DX12 doesn't help older i5's unlike older i7's which gain a BIG boost

I'd get the monitor, save up till August and see how the CPU market is for CPU/Mobo upgrade :)

if you had the extra... what I run with my rtx 2080 as its g-sync capable

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £546.05 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Christ, i read it as a 1070 (not wearing my glasses).

My advice still stands - same as @orbitalwalsh's but without the added moistness of spending your money. :D

But, it's now a no-brainer. Get the monitor first the 4.8GHz sandybridge with a 2070 will hold, even better, until Ryzen 2 release and you'll have a much more fun with a premium monitor than a few more FPS on an ageing 1080p while waiting.

@orbitalwalsh knows his gaming screens - where as i'm IPS blinkered...

Thanks for the fast response.

That was the answer i was hoping for.

What do you think of these? I would prefer the extra wide preferably.

I like the sound of the Omen monitor, just think i should maybe size up?

Calling @orbitalwalsh - forum members money to be spent on very respectable VA monitors for non ips.

Yes, it makes sense and gives you time to assess your options while still having a worthy and exciting upgrade to play with in the interim.

I know the above Asus would work with Free-sync

Damn nice wide-screen

Unfortunately Samsung bit quiet with their screens. Helped UK team out a while ago, will need to get ahold of them to find out if they have done testing on their Freesync screens to work with Nvidia as some are just stunning with QDot

Increasing resolution has direct effect only to GPU load.
Per frame there's zero difference to CPU load regardless if you're running at 320x240 or 3840x2160.
The latter just needs hundred times the GPU power to render those pixels...

^^^ only games like ARMA that are heavy CPU based would feel it a little - or indie games designed around CPU .. They Are Billions at 4K last two waves brings CPUs to its knees !

That's still sat in my steam account unopened. Need more time...

Give me a detailed tutorial @orbitalwalsh so i can get straight into it - a couple hundred lines should suffice.

Lose... Best way to learn is by losing again and again and again. It's that addictive !
Always keep building something... Always expand. Play 150 days at easiest settings first .
Don't be afraid to restart over and over till your placed at a good starting location /surrounding area

What kind of tutorial is that:

Die, die and then die again or, alternatively, kill yourself so you can die in nicer surroundings. You missed your vocation as a motivational speaker :D

*Seems to be the consensus from the little i've read - such a strange concept and yet apparently works. I'll hopefully get some time tonight, to die repeatedly - fun!

Thanks for the info but im still stuck as to whether I should go ultra wide or go 32"

** No Competitors **

This Acer looks good (as its 35" ultra wide and higher res) but does anybody know if it is any good?

I do like the asus, some reviews are saying that ghosting is a problem. I found this one which is ultra widescreen. Would really love an ultrawidescreen, i dont really play many FPS so dont think it would be a problem. Cant find many reviews on it, but looks ok only 1000:1 contrast ratio though. Do you think that would be a problem? Also some suppliers say it has freesync and some dont?
