Hey all,

looking to build a new computer for the tasks i have to complete..
cant decide which way to go. because some of my workloads require core count other require core speed

Currently have
1800x @ stock (like slience)
16GB 3333mhz
1080TI

which i will be retired to Girlfriends PC.

I'm wanting a new computer for faster workloads & because i want too :)

Workload is (percentage is how often each task is performed)
Gaming/multitasking 60%
Visual Studio Coding/Python/C/C++/C# 30%
Light-room 10%

also might want to compile & game at the same time.

Gaming Resolutions 2560x1440 (144hz) & 4K both with gsync

Fixed Parts 2080TI

Tempted by: i7 7900x & Threadripper 2950x/2920x any help is appreciated.

I'm thinking 7900X because to me it looks like most of what you do actually depends more on clock speed, i'm not sure about Visual Studio Coding but its Microsoft and with that probably very badly coded with really crappy thread balancing.

For Gaming i would always suggest Ryzen over SkyLake-X because the simple truth is SkyLake-X is about 10% down on gaming IPC compared with Ryzen.

Tricky one but i don't think the 16 cores on the 2950X are going to help you as much at the higher clock rates on the 7900X.

Having said that i think the 7900X is going to be much more of a thermonuclear monstrosity to get running at 4.6Ghz on all cores than the 2950X is to get running at 4Ghz.

By the looks of that 16 lower clocked cores are not going to make a huge difference to 10 higher clocked ones

For what you need they are probably going to be performing about even give or take in specific workloads.

Which ones cheaper?

so i9 7900x = £889 1950X = £728

ocuk doesnt have the 2950x...

So that's a bit of a curveball :D

Can you wait? i think the 7900X would be the one for you at £750, i just googled and the 2950X is due for release in a few days, maybe that will knock the £120 or so off the 7900X, or maybe just scream to hell with it the 1950X is really good at just over £700!

Sorry i'm not being much help, i'm finding it just as difficult as you to come up with a definitive answer, isn't it complicated when there is real competition in the market?

Very true, the trouble is with TR is with Setting it up for gaming (switching UMA/Numa) and if need to swap this a lot.

Then again The 2950X isnt even on the OCUK website for preorder.... another curveball

2950X, 2920X are due late september and october respectively. X299 is dead platform and new one is X499 (or 599).
Your choice.

Imho if you have the 1800X hold it until April and see what Zen2 brings
