Hey guys, computer is playing up, decides not to post randomly, sometimes one reset will do, other times it involves unplugging for a while or even leaving on for nights in a row. No green light/ CD drive won't open, monitor has no signal.

Spec:
Asus P5N-E Sli
2gb cellshock pc6400
E6600
XP
8800GTX

Any ideas whats wrong guys?/procedure to try to figure out whats wrong.

Sounds like it could be a PSU issue. Which one do you have?

Try unplugging hardware that you don't strictly need (DVD etc) and see if the problem gets any better. Alternatively swap the PSU with a known good one and see what happens.

Sounds to me like possible faulty mobo, if it's being that random. Had similar myself with an old Asus P5P-800, when the caps had blown. Worked sometimes, didn't others, and steadily got worse.

My PSU blew a few months ago, computer wouldn't turn on that time, had a Corsair 620W, then replaced it with a Be Quiet 650W.

I'd go with El_Watcher's advice first, if you can get your hands on a working PSU and test it, that would be the best place to start I think.

I've got the exact same problem with my new computer build, it turns on but nothing displays unfortunately. The fans are on, the motherboard lights are on and I've checked all the cables I connected were in the correct place.

I've been researching on the net and called PC repair places and received a variety of answers, such as: faulty motherboard, incompatible RAM, faulty CPU, PSU isn't working, Stand-offs grounding the motherboard.

My next step will be to disassemble everything then assemble it again. I don't have a spare working PSU so I might have to take it to an independant repair shop to get it looked at, sigh...

sounds like the psu, do you have a surge protector on your pc? also when your last psu died were you running you current set-up because if you were the old psu dying could have damaged your motherboard, ram, cpu ect.

never underestimate the importance of surge protection

Similar thing happened to me tonight.

took my new build downstairs to mess about with it, and when i booted it back up, the screen wouldn't turn on. I tried everything i could think of, and was starting to think i had borked the mobo.

then 2 hours later i tapped the front of my case, and it booted up. turns out i had the wires that are attached to the power/reset switch were pulling. loosened them up a bit, and now its running with no problems, and even beebs when it posts, which before it never, so i must have loosened the pc speaker too hehe.

If your old PSU blew you never know exactly what damage it may have caused (if any) and problems dont always appear striaght away.

As the other guys have said have a look at your current PSU, see if there are any probs with this. Otherwise it could well be your motherboard isnt to happy.

I do have a surge protector yes. As for the motherboard/ram or cpu its strange that my computer worked ok for a few months though then started having problems though isn't it?

Mine isn't a new build btw and my computer isn't overclocked, and i dont have a spare psu to power my gtx.

Any other ideas guys? Otherwise tomorrow i'm going to turn it off, then i've got a psu tester, so can test to see if thats working ok. But then all i can do is swap ram and graphics card from my other pc/hairdryer the capacitors to see if thats the problem.

I'll be interested in seeing what solutions are proposed as I'm having similar problems - powercut last night and now I'm getting no output to the monitor. Computer powers on, but nothing is displayed!

Hey maybe its the ram modules last week I was updatind the pc and turned off. I tried to turn it on and it didn't start. took it to the local pc shop and change everything in the pc cpu, mobo and at last he change the ram module (2 GB one) and it worked fine. Try using one module and change it.. or you have 1 stick of 2GB
Dave try the ram ,my pc also turn on but didn't display anything, swapped to the onbard still no display (faulty ram)

He changed the ram last => you need a new pc shop mate, thats the first thing to check

I'm also curious about taking a hair dryer to the capacitors, how is this expected to help? Please let us know if it does
