Hi guys, I have moved my components to a new case fractal define s with power supply evga 650 g2 and I have some problems. I can only boot with 1 ram stick and it only boots to bios screen. I can see my ssd in boot menu but still only boots to bios.

My motherboard is Asus z97 pro gamer, Samsung ssd 256gb, i7 4790k

didn't think moving to a new case would be this much problem. Can anyone help me or give me things to try, I can't find motherboard manual either so I don't know if the LEDs are telling me something. Thanks

I made a really bad video to show what's up. https://vid.me/X2oq lol

What I'd do is try connecting the boot drive to SATA port 1.

If no joy, then reset CMOS completely by shorting the appropriate pins on the board. See in spoiler the relevant section with detailed info on how to do this for your motherboard:

It could be that one of the components still had some power in it when unplugged, possibly the motherboard if not the drive. That's assuming that something on the new case isn't shorting it.

Manual is here:-

Try disconnecting everything except your monitor and power (I once had a faulty keyboard which would stop boot up) and then see if it boots.

Is the priority order setup in the bios so the SSD will boot first (if at all), it maybe that its not set correrctly in the bios config.

You mention only 1 ram stick will boot. Have your tried the other modules in the same slot? How many modules do you have? Are you putting them in the correct slots? If you have two they go into the A2 and B2 positions on the board.

I would go for a bios reset and think about updating the bios firmware to the latest version (from the ASUS website). Link below, just select your correct OS for the correct bios.

If you reset the BIOS makesure the SSD is set as AHCI otherwise that will stop the boot as shown in your video (so thats worth checking also).

Page 1-21 in the manual explains how to clear RTC Ram) if you are unsure. **Edit Danny75 has put this page up on his response**

And if all else fails, remove it all and start again.

Double check that you have plugged everything in properly :)

This includes in some situations making sure the ssd is installed in the same sata slot as previously.

I think systems usually boot to bios when they can't detect any form of bootable thing. Is the SSD still set to ahci ?

I have TeamGroup 8GB x2 2400mhz ram and already had the latest bios beforehand.

I cleared the cmos and it was the same thing where it just went to bios but now I tried booting from USB with windows on it and used the windows start up repair, it said it failed to repair but I rebooted and I got into windows! I don't know what the repair actually does but I guess it worked.

I tested the RAM slots and it seems only the last 2 slots (B1 and B2) allow me to boot with 2 sticks, dual channel doesn't work at all, I just have a red light next to sticks and a black screen.

So right now I have 16gb in single channel. I guess I can accept this but I'm worried how the first 2 slots have died. I did reseat the cpu heatsink so maybe I damaged something in the process.

Should I be worried about the non working RAM slots and buy a new motherboard or will it be fine?

Thanks for the help guys
