I put together the basis of my new pc last week, since Sunday it worked fine, but 30mins ago, I was chatting on msn, next thing I know is it just powers off, so I think nothing of it and turn it on again only for it to keep constantly turning off everytime I try turning it on again,

spec is:

e4300
asus p5n-e
2gb corsair pc6400
x850 xt
160gb sata hdd
lian li pc7
fsp bluestorm 500w atx v2.0? (it's not latest 2.2 spec)

I've tried clearing cmos, disconnecting the hdd makes it stay on for longer but still eventually turns off..what can the problem be?

:(

I have virtually the same setup as you, is your heatsink properly fitted?

Then again it should boot into the BIOS, when i had a problem like this, it was because i rebuilt the machine and forgot to put in the 4pin connector.

Hi Tupac,

long time no see!

sounds weird, normally these kinda problems become apparent nearer the first boot?

If it worked fine for a few days then out of no-where starts cutting out? hmmm?

PSU? or perhaps failing 'other' component?

I can only narrow it down to the mobo or psu? It can't be the gpu, cpu or ram can it?

The psu must be 2yrs old now, pulled it from my a64 system.

Hello Wayne.

2 years! thats plenty of time for it to wear down, its probably only a 300w PSU now, sounds strange but they do seem to wear out over time due to Electrolytic capacitor aging:

When used heavily or over an extended period of time (1+ years) a power supply will slowly lose some of its initial wattage capacity. We recommend you add 20% if you plan to keep your PSU for more than 1 year, or 25-30% for 24/7 usage and 1+ years.

Can you swap out the PSU (got a spare one? beg, borrow, steal?)

No spare psu's :(

I just had a play round with it, and now it gets to the xp loading screen before powering down..

Hmmm its always a good idea to 'test' a problem before splashing out on a new component, from what you've described its a fair bet the PSU is failing, although it could be something else, ah the world of trouble-shooting, such pain!

Um I wonder what you can strip off your current system to ease up the power needs? Optical drives, extra hard drives, have u got a less power hungry VGA card etc, maybe even disconnect the hard disk and just try to get it running memtest from a floppy.

I have come to realise that having a spare PC or a mate who prepared to lend his PC for your trouble-shootings needs is an absolute must!!!

(I got two spare PSUs just sitting here too, pity u dont live in London!).

I'll just take it to the store I bought the cpu mobo and ram off and see what they say, I guess it could just be the psu or mobo. As I don't have a lesser gpu, ram or spare psu

Posting from a laptop is a pain

Yeah but its better than nothing at all, I'm old enough to remember building my first few PCs before the internet arrived, now when u had a problem back then that was HELL!!!!!!!

Hmmm I don't know much about fsp bluestorm PSU's? has it been running 24/7 for two years then?

I've had a pair of two year old ANTEC NEO 480s fail in the past 6 months, but they choose to go out with a bang instead of dying slowly. I've also had a two year old ANTEC True550 fail, but that went out slowly, the main sympton being the PC wouldn't POST (all fans spinning, HDD's etc), swapped that out and voila all working again.

Spec up a new PSU mate, ENERMAX Liberty are good, as are the TAGEN Easycons as are others (theres £80 you didn't expect to be paying out! )

[edit] the ENERMAX (Coolergiant) have a UK base and a no-quibble rma policy, tops marks to them...

I took the system to the shop, £15 they charged to do a system analysis and security deposit to narrow down what the possibiliy could be, if it's one of their parts I can demand that money back cant I?

No pc until around Thursday time now...

Never used one, a few folk like them but the Enermax, Tagan, Seasonic models are far more popular, also Corsair have entered the fray, they look decent (rebadged seasonics) reviews say the Corsair PSUs are almost 'over-engineered' :)

Hi,

I have a Seasonic S12 430W PSU running my rig for the last 12 months:-

AMD Athlon 3700+ @ 2.9
ATI X1950 XTX
2 x Samsung HD's
2GB Corsair
ABIT IN8 SLI
Samsung DVD Recorder

Brilliant PSU if you aske me. Makes no noise on my system that I can hear - and I have a very quite system. Bought it to replace a Hiper one that was only a week old - the Hiper made a terrible squealing sound.

Just wish they had there modular ones at the time but they didn't. I'm building a new rig in the next month or two and it will be a Seasonic or Corsair PSU I use.
