Hi there,
Today we had 2 power cuts & since them the daughters pc will not boot, (it was on at the time). Basically i press the power button & nothing, no lights etc. It is an Asus p5q vm, q6600, ati 4850, 8 gb ocz reaper ram system I built a few years ago. It is on a Belkin surge protector as are all my other electrical equipment. The Belkins green light is on and says protected.

Where should I start looking tomorrow when I am sober:D

cheers

Will

Start at the beginning and check the PSU. Hopefully it will just be that though there is the possibility that some other components might have blown.

yes pc was plugged into a surge protector. My first port of call tomorrow will be the fuse, then psu but then I don't know how to test motherboard. I have a spare psu laying around somewhere.

Thanks for your suggestions, turns out it was the power supply. Luckily I had a spare one to try. Bloody annoyed it went pop on a belkin surge protector, but who knows it might have been on its way out anyway.

get in touch with belkin because they claim that there serge protectors will protect anything and offer insurance on them i think since it sisnt protect you PSU you should bill them for a new one

The Belkin did exactly what its numeric specifications claim. It connected that supply directly to AC mains. What was between a transient and a supply? Wire and a switch.

Belkin claims to protect from transients that typically do not damage any power supplies. If someone knew otherwise, then he posted the Belkin spec number that claims that protection. No number posted for one obvious reason.

Good luck trying to get its warranty honored. Fine print has so many exemptions that, well, as Newman learned the hard way in "SONY TiVo SVR-2000":
Eventually it boiled down to a line in the warranty that said "Belkin at it's sole discretion can reject any claim for any reason".

Best protection adjacent to that supply was already inside that supply.
